BULLETIN NEWS
ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL - GOAL $91,243.00
To date, 29% of parishioners have pledged $48,425.95 to the Annual Catholic Appeal. The Goal this year has been assigned to your parish based upon a $63.10 per household assessment. Parishioners capable of contributing a larger amount are encouraged to do so. Our goal this year is to achieve participation from every parishioner. Your participation is vital to the success of the ACA not only for these ministries, but for our own parish as well. Please make a gift that reflects your gratitude for God’s incredible blessings. Join me in returning your completed pledge card by placing it in today’s collection. If you are unable to make a financial gift, please return your pledge card indicating that; we will see that you do not receive a second request.

HAITI NEWS - PASTOR’S GRATITUDE
Your pastor attempts each year (with historical success these past few years) to raise a couple hundred thousand dollars in behalf of hungry Haitian children in that nation with the reputation of the poorest of the poor in our Western Hemisphere. Kindred Journey Inc. cannot feed the entire Haitian population of over eight million residents. But our Organization’s efforts have changed dramatically the physical wellness of thousands of children in the Pandiassou region of the Central Plateau of that country.
This past weekend, your pastor completed his Missionary Cooperative Appeals in six diocesan parishes as assigned to him by the Propagation of the Faith Office. He remains prayerfully grateful for your prayerful support and tolerance for his absence on those six occasions.
Individuals ask how one is able to raise $200,000.00 in a twelve month period. Allow me to share this story with you. At one of my assignments a woman at the end of Mass asked if I could remain on location for five minutes while she drove home to get her checkbook. By the time of her return the church had been locked and your pastor was on the sidewalk by his car. When she arrived she handed Monsignor a check for $3,000.00 and said that the donation was given to purchase an additional water pump for one of the lakes in Haiti. The generosity received from scores of parishioners and non-parishioners would involve chapters in any book that might be written about the miraculous generosity on the part of God’s people who realize that giving to the “needy” is giving to Christ Jesus, Himself.

NEW OPPORTUNITY - PARISH HAITI COMMITTEE
To further enhance and support the bond with our sister Parish in Pandiassou, we have elected to establish a new Parish Haiti Committee. This committee will meet on a periodic basis, and working hand in hand with Kindred Journey Fund, Inc., will identify and implement specific local projects to benefit the peasants of Haiti and to strengthen our commitment to their cause. An initial task will be to examine the feasibility and minimum requirements for the establishment of group tours for parishioners and other interested parties which would allow people to see first-hand the tremendous daily challenges faced by the Haitian citizenry, as well to testify to the benefits of current programs financed through Kindred Journey. The inaugural meeting of this new committee will be held on Monday, October 5 at 7pm in the rectory conference room. Please consider this opportunity to offer your time and talent to this very worthwhile endeavor. Any questions, call Doug Tusing at 472-4257.

YEAR FOR PRIESTS
Recall that Christ decided to pick human beings to carry on his mission of salvation. Yes he decided to use weak and fallible creatures for this unique mission. When contemplating Sacred Scripture we take notice of the differences in Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, James and Thomas. These differences are still with us at this moment in history and will be for all future ages. Christ continues to use all different kinds of people with different kinds of gifts and personal character traits. Did he take a risk then? Does he still take a risk?
Take spiritual comfort in the knowledge that he sent the Holy Spirit upon his chosen ones on Pentecost. He promised that he would be with his church until the end of time. He is with us today and in a special manner with his ordained priests. His Holy Spirit is the real builder of the Kingdom now and all future days.
Continue to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

A LIFETIME OF SERVICE, A MOMENT OF THANKS
The annual collection to help subsidize medical insurance and retirement expenses of active and senior Diocesan priests will take place next weekend. While all parishes subsidize these expenses, the increases are outpacing the current level of support. If you would like to make a gift as an expression of gratitude for all priests who serve our Church, please place the special envelope (found in today’s bulletin) in next weekend’s offertory. Thank you for your generosity and concern .

FORTY HOURS DEVOTION
Three days of special prayerful devotion to the Real Presence of Jesus in the form of Eucharistic Food are scheduled for September 27, 28 and 29. All parishioners are encouraged to use the three days of Eucharistic Devotion to better appreciate the incredible truth of our faith that God became a part of the human scene.
Then Christ gifted us with His flesh to eat and His blood to drink in the Eucharist. How wonderful that Gift!! How great that blessing!! Attend the evening services on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Confessions will be available on Sunday and Monday evenings. We again urge visitation by you before the Blessed Sacrament for 30 minutes or an hour each of the three days. Fr. Paul Robine will be the homilist the three evenings of the Forty Hours Devotions.
A Forty Hours collection envelope can be found in your September envelope packet. Your offering for this devotional event may be deposited in the weekend collection or at the Monday night Mass.

ALTAR SERVERS AND PROCESSION FOR FORTY HOURS SOLEMN CLOSING
For the Solemn Closing (Tues. September 29th at 7:00 PM) all 6th, 7th & 8th grade servers are expected to be present and participate in the procession in praise and honor of Jesus' Real Presence in the Eucharist. Please gather in the church hall no later than 6:30 PM on Tuesday evening to receive instructions. Altar Servers will wear albs. Servers are also asked to be faithful to their special serving assignments and their scheduled Eucharistic adoration time before the Blessed Sacrament and should refer to the Forty Hours schedule (which is attached to the September Server Schedule) for times and other details.

HELP NEEDED: COOKIES AND SNACKS
We would appreciate HELP in providing cookies/snacks/desserts for the parish social during Forty Hours. Please bring food/refreshments to the Church Library on Sunday, September 27th.

COMMISSIONING CEREMONY FOR ALL PARISH CATECHISTS
At the Saturday evening 5:00PM Mass this weekend, all Catechists for the elementary and junior-senior high school classes were officially commissioned to their important ministry of handing on the faith to our parish children. As teachers, they depend on our prayerful support in their weekly efforts to serve as ministers of God’s word. We are grateful for their generous response to God’s call. Catechists for this year are: Roberta Woodley, Dawn Drahnak, Rose Puleo, Lisa Swope, Doreen Braniff, Sarah Zearing, Lois Krug, Janet Smith, Cindy Lucas, Colleen Spicher, Ann Poole, Patty Creany, Diane Bopp, Fran Jensen, Brian Bracken, Kim Muffie, Karen Nagy, Gina Michkofsky, Br. Paul, T.O.R., Sarah Zearing, Br. Richard, T.O.R., Cindy Lucas, Nancy McCulley. Directors are: Elementary - Mary Harvey; Jr./Sr. High - Kerry & Nancy McCulley.

TODAY: CATECHETICAL SUNDAY
This day is set aside to celebrate the teaching ministry of the church. We celebrate the important work of catechesis in every aspect of the life of Holy Name Parish. We recognize with gratitude the role our catechists play in the faith formation of our parish children. Their dedication to this teaching ministry helps students to know and love Jesus Christ. Their dedication and time continues to be a great gift to this parish. Along with parents they teach the importance of sharing the Good News of salvation to our children both in the primary and secondary levels. Special gratitude is extended to Mary Harvey and Kerry & Nancy McCulley who, respectively, oversee those two levels of religious education.

NATIONAL LIFE CHAIN
On October 4, 2009, Respect Life Sunday, there will be a LIFE CHAIN from 1:00-3:00PM along Route 219 and East Carroll St. in Carrolltown. Everyone in our area is invited to join with us, and with groups of people from across the United States, as we peacefully, prayerfully and silently stand and demonstrate our support for the sanctity of human life! Please come and pick up your signs in front of St. Benedict Church, Carrolltown. Refreshments will be served in the church hall after the Life Chain. Please join us. Sponsored by Citizens Concerned for Human Life. For more information, visit www.lifechain.net or www.prolifecambriasomerset.org.

CHILDRENS' STEWARDSHIP - ENVELOPES
The church is attempting to catechize the younger generation on the meaning of stewardship involving their time, talent and possessions. Parents need to share the role of catechizing their children in the proper attitude and spirit to share their talent, time and possessions for the greater honor and glory of God and His church. Children envelopes are distributed for this purpose, namely, to form (from the earliest ages) the personality in recognizing that everything we are or possess has the good Lord as its source. To train a child to be a loving and giving person rather than a self-centered individual is indeed a gift to the church. Regular use of contribution envelopes is one of many means of forming a catholic attitude and disposition of being grateful to God for so many blessings being currently experienced. Remind your children, always, with proper explanation, to use their church envelopes on a weekly basis. The new boxes of envelopes will be distributed to all school age children within the next two weeks.

ATTENTION BISHOP CARROLL STUDENTS AND CENTRAL CAMBRIA SENIORS
All Bishop Carroll students and Central Cambria Seniors are asked to pick up their Students= Offertory Envelopes located on the tables in the back of church after all Masses the weekend of 9/26-9/27.

PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN (VIRTUS) TRAINING
A Protecting God’s Children training session will be offered on Thursday, October 1 at Holy Name Church Hall. Anyone who works with or chaperones the youth of our parish, in any capacity, is required to take this training. It is only necessary to take this training once. The three hour session will begin promptly at 6:00PM. You may register prior to the session online at www.virtus.org. For questions, call Sarah Zearing 472-5631 or Susie McCombie 472-7893.

ROSARY RALLY
The Altoona-Johnstown Curia of the Legion of Mary cordially invites you to attend the annual Rosary Rally which will be held at Holy Name Church, Ebensburg on Sunday, October 11 at 3:00PM. The theme for 2009 is Let Us Pray the Rosary in Our Troubled World. The Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary will be depicted in a living tableau by children from area parishes. We look forward to seeing you during this annual celebration in honor of our Blessed Mother.

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME - USE IT WELL
People relate to time in many different ways. Referees CALL time; prisoners SERVE time; musicians MARK time; historians RECORD time; loafers KILL time; statisticians KEEP time. But no matter how people relate to time, the fact remains that all of us are given the same amount of time. There are only 24 hours per day, 168 hours per week. Use them.

LIFELINES
Our human life is sacred not because of what we can do, but because of what we are. God has dared to choose “the foolish things of the world to shame the wise...the weak things of the world to shame the strong...the lowly things...and the despised things - and the things that are not - to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before Him” [1 Corinthians 1:27-29]. We dare not choose differently, and we dare not demean those who bear the Creator’s image and live in the Creator’s plan.
