LABOR DAY
We as Catholics liturgically dedicate Labor Day to St. Joseph the Worker. As we
pay honor to honest labor, there is no better way than through the foster father
of Jesus who earned the bread to support the Holy Family by daily labor in the
role of carpenter. Work for earthly gain is blessed when it is done with an
honest and upright motive. Our work should lead to the greater honor and glory
of God while involving concepts of livelihood and enjoyment. Life is so much
more than just going to work and coming home, this done week after week and year
after year.
Previous U.S. Bishops= statements on labor noted that just as Catholic teaching
calls on employers to treat their workers with dignity and respect, laborers and
unions must not just seek economic gain but must contribute to the common good.
Catholic teachings on labor challenge employees and employers to see their work
as part of their Christian vocation to transform the world in the light of the
Gospel. There should always be a spiritual aspect to the work we do - the Lord
should be glorified by it. Have you ever considered your work as holy? It ought
to be a means of honoring God as well as a tool to sanctify the laborer.
Whatever your occupation, do not permit it to separate you from your God. The
Mass on this day is scheduled for 9:00 AM.
YEAR FOR PRIESTS - SUPPORT YOUR PRIEST
Pope Benedict XVI has declared June 2009 to June 2010 as the Year for Priests.
The theme for the priestly year is “Faithfulness of Christ, Faithfulness of
Priests.” Its purpose is to encourage what the Pope calls “the yearning for
spiritual perfection” in priests.
But the Year for Priests also gives lay people a special opportunity to learn
more about priesthood, to recognize and honor priests, and to encourage priestly
vocations. Only God can fully sustain a priest in his vocation, but Catholics
can also provide everyday support and encouragement. Here are five things you
can do to help your parish priest:
1. Pray for Your Priest. Encourage others to do the same. You might consider
designating a daily chore or activity as a sacrificial offering for your priest.
Or you might say a particular prayer every day for him and let him know of this.
2. Participate and Be Active. Come to Mass every weekend and get involved in
your parish. Use your gifts and talents to help the parish grow. Volunteer to
help, attend parish events, and support it financially. Let your priest know of
times when God has worked through him. It will reaffirm his calling.
3. Watch Your Expectations. Sometimes, people have unrealistic expectations of
what a priest “should be” or “should do.” Remember that priests have
limitations, too. Encourage him to take time off to maintain both his spiritual
focus and energy levels. Accept him for the unique person he is and trust God to
work through your priest to meet the needs of the parish.
4. Be Prepared to Believe the Best. Watch how you talk about your priest,
especially in front of children. A few negative people can do a lot of damage.
It’s best to give your priest the benefit of the doubt. If there is a legitimate
complaint, make an appointment to go to talk with the priest. Pray the Lord to
guide you.
5. Show Your Appreciation. Everyone needs affirmation. Thank your priest for
giving his life to you and to the Lord. Remember him on special occasions. Ask
him what ways could best express your appreciation. Remember Jesus makes Himself
present to us through His priests.
FORTY HOURS DEVOTION
Three days of special prayerful devotion to the Real Presence of Jesus in the
form of Eucharistic Food are scheduled for September 27, 28 and 29. All
parishioners are encouraged to use the three days of Eucharistic Devotion to
better appreciate the incredible truth of our faith that God became a part of
the human scene.
Then Christ gifted us with His flesh to eat and His blood to drink in the
Eucharist. How wonderful that Gift!! How great that blessing!! Attend the
evening services on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Confessions will be
available on Sunday and Monday evenings. We again urge visitation by you before
the Blessed Sacrament for 30 minutes or an hour each of the three days. Fr. Paul
Robine will be the homilist the three evenings of the Forty Hours Devotions.
A Forty Hours collection envelope can be found in your September envelope
packet. Your offering for this devotional event may be deposited in the weekend
collection or at the Monday night Mass.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WORK
The opening of the Fall Term at Holy Name School progressed smoothly this past
Monday. The Pew Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate shared some
enlightening facts concerning the positive effects upon those who have had a
Catholic school experience.
1. It is a fact that more adults are leaving our Church, but those alumni of our
Catholic schools are much more likely to remain faithful;
2. Even though fewer are worshipping at Sunday Mass, those who have attended
Catholic schools are much more loyal;
3. Graduates of Catholic schools approach Confession more often;
4. Those who have gone to Catholic schools marry in the church at a higher
percentage, report more fulfilling lifelong marriages, and have more children;
5. Alumni of our Catholic schools grasped the essentials of church teaching and
the Bible at a significantly higher rate.
It is now empirically proven - Catholic Schools work!! They are the most
effective agents of catechesis, spiritual, moral, and mental formation, and
evangelization that our church has.
Are they perfect? No. Do they have problems of their own? Yes. Does this mean
that we should ignore our other programs of religious education? NEVER!!! But
they are worth it. I thank our principal, teachers and parents for getting us
off to another promising year of Catholic education at Holy Name School. Here in
Ebensburg the verdict is in, Holy Name School works!!! Let us join in prayer for
its continued success as it celebrates this year its 100th Birthday. Much more
will be shared with you during this Centennial year of its existence.
STEWARDSHIP OF TIME - A LOT OF WORK TO DO
If Jesus walked up to you and said: “Come follow Me, I have a lot of work to do
and I really need your help” would you tell Him to get lost because you are just
too busy in your pursuit of personal possessions and worldly comfort? Have you
given any consideration to helping Jesus carry out His works in your own church?
INVITATION TO BECOME A CATHOLIC
Call Sr. Margie now if you or someone you know is thinking of becoming Catholic.
Our next Catholic Inquiry Session is Tues. September 22, 7 PM in the Church
Library.
THE NEEDS OF HOLY NAME PARISH
1. Growth in holiness; 2. Fostering vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and
religious life; 3. Sustaining Catholic education and faith formation; 4.
Expanding our initiatives of charity and justice concerns; 5. Formation in the
stewardship of time, talent and treasure.
There are many challenges that cannot be overlooked: 1. Those who have left the
church or drifted away; 2. Those angry at the church because of the misconduct
of a few clergymen; 3. The poor who continue to cry out throughout the world; 4.
Those who are struggling to keep their marriages strong and those among us who
are divorced and remarried; 5. The attacks on the unborn and family life; 6. Our
young people who sense a distance from the Church.
Our Parish Pastoral Council has many issues to address. Its spiritual
involvement to enhance and enrich our Holy Name Community is a work in progress.
LIFELINES - JUST THE STATS
Numbers are important when we talk about life inside the womb. Here are some
memorable numbers in the lives of unborn children:
• 3 - the number of weeks when an unborn child’s eyes develop and the heart
starts beating
• 6 - the number of weeks an unborn baby’s skeleton is complete and brain waves
develop
• 9 - the number of weeks when an unborn baby begins to swallow
• 11 - the number of weeks when an unborn baby begins to suck his/her thumb
• 16 - the number of weeks when an unborn baby begins kicking
• 18 - the number of weeks when an unborn baby can cry
• 20 - the number of weeks when hair appears on an unborn baby’s head
• 1.2 Million - the number of unborn children killed by abortion each year
• 46 Million - the number of unborn children killed since Roe v. Wade, the U.S.
Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion
CCD CATECHISTS
Catechists make a weekly commitment from September to late April/mid May to
share our faith story to elementary and secondary students. Volunteers can
select either service on a Tuesday afternoon or Sunday morning. The parish is
not only seeking adults for this ministry but also high school students who can
function as aides. Volunteers for this large parish are always needed and
appreciated. See articles below for additional information.
ELEMENTARY CCD TEACHERS: THE PARISH NEEDS YOU
More volunteers are needed in a variety of services for the Fall Religious
Education program. Besides the traditional role of catechist, we are looking for
teaching-teams, classroom aides (ideal for newly confirmed seniors or volunteer
moms/dads), CCD assistants to give one-on-one attention to students as needed,
professional teachers willing to mentor new teacher-volunteers at their
convenience, even hall monitors to assist with snacks or an occasional sick
student or to make phone calls, etc. Those willing to be a substitute CCD
teacher periodically are always welcome and much appreciated! If you see
yourself being able to contribute to the Fall program in any of these creative
ways, please contact Mary Harvey (Elementary Program) by calling the rectory
office at 472-7244. The parish needs you! Classes will begin in September.
URGENT! - JR./SR. HIGH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION TEACHERS STILL NEEDED!!!
We are still in need of teachers for the Jr./Sr. High Religious Education
Program. We are looking for teachers whether you can share your time every
Sunday morning or if you are willing to sub when one of our teachers can’t be
there. Your help is greatly needed!! Please consider sharing your faith with the
youth of our parish....they need you and so do we!!! Please call Nancy McCulley
at 241-7809.

SCHEDULE FOR EM, LECTORS, GIFT BEARERS, USHERS & GREETERS
A new schedule for weekend ministries from October-March 2010 is being prepared
now. If requesting a major change (Bands, Mass times, drop/add, etc), call Sr.
Margie immediately.
ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL - GOAL $91,243.00
To date, 28% of parishioners have pledged $46,947.85 to the Annual Catholic
Appeal. The Goal this year has been assigned to your parish based upon a $63.10
per household assessment. Parishioners capable of contributing a larger amount
are encouraged to do so. Our goal this year is to achieve participation from
every parishioner. Your participation is vital to the success of the ACA not
only for these ministries, but for our own parish as well. Please make a gift
that reflects your gratitude for God’s incredible blessings. Join me in
returning your completed pledge card by placing it in today’s collection. If you
are unable to make a financial gift, please return your pledge card indicating
that; we will see that you do not receive a second request.
ADULT CLASSES ON “THE CREED”
Sr. Margie will teach 8 classes on “The Creed,” Church Hall, 7-9 PM, Sept. 16,
23, 30; Oct. 7, 14; and Nov. 3, 18, 24. As Catholics, we pray the Nicene Creed
every Sunday. Learn the history of this great prayer and the meaning behind each
statement of faith. Book fee:$10. Call this week to register: 472-8315.
CATHOLIC UPDATE: THE CREED
With fall classes scheduled in the parish on “The Creed,” it is timely that this
is the topic of September’s Catholic Update. The Catholic Catechism states
clearly that our faith does not rest in formulas but in the realities expressed
in those formulas. We don’t just believe things about God; we believe in God and
we believe in Jesus. That is, our faith involves a personal response, a personal
relationship with the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Our Catholic
Creed is a very ancient summary of the faith. This article traces some of the
history of how this profession of faith was formulated by the early Church and
handed down to us today. During Baptisms and at the Easter Vigil, the Creed is
celebrated in dramatic question/answer form: Do you reject Satan...? Do you
believe in God the Father almighty...and in Jesus Christ his Son...? and in the
Holy Spirit, Lord and giver of life...? Well, DO YOU? Our response, “I DO,”
binds us to a life of Christian discipleship. It is a public commitment as
sacred as any solemn oath or marriage vows. This article will make you think
twice about the words we recite so routinely each week at Mass.
GRIEF SUPPORT MEETING
The monthly parish Grief Support Group meets Tues, 7PM in the Church Library.
Open to parishioners and their families and friends. For more information, call
Sr. Margie.
INFANT BAPTISM PREPARATION
