BULLETIN NEWS
FLU SEASON: DIOCESAN DIRECTIVES
Effective the weekend of October 17/18, the Bishops of Pennsylvania have issued the following directives as a precaution against H1N1 Swine Flu:

• The Precious Blood will not be distributed. Since we believe the whole Body of Christ is present under either sign, this temporary directive is not contrary to any Catholic belief.
• Any Sign of Peace is to be without bodily contact. Hand shaking and kissing as signs of peace are to be suspended. A simple nod is suggested.
• The most sanitary way to receive Holy Communion is in the hand. However, reception on the tongue may not be denied.
• All are encouraged to wash their hands before coming to church, and be assured you are excused from the obligation of Mass when feeling ill due to possible flu.
Bands of Eucharistic Ministers will be reduced to 4 ministers of the Body of Christ at every weekend Mass. (Daily Mass at 8AM: only one EM minister is needed.) Eucharistic Ministers are asked to try make this adjustment among yourselves - the first four from each Band who enter the sanctuary can minister; extras will be asked to return to their pews. (If possible, Eucharistic ministers can carry small hand-sanitizers for private use just prior to coming up to the altar.) These norms are temporary; each local bishop will announce when these directives can be withdrawn.

PRO-LIFE PRAYER BREAKFAST
Citizens Concerned for Human Life will be holding a “Respect Life Prayer Breakfast” on October 31, 2009 at 10:00 AM at Holy Name Church Hall in Ebensburg. We are very pleased to have as our speaker this year Sean O’Hare. Sean is a young, dynamic speaker and entrepreneur. He has founded and owns multiple businesses. He is also the founder and president of LifeHQ.org, which seeks to use technology and the media to promote, educate and inform others about life from conception to natural death. Young and old alike, we all need to learn how to use technology and media to promote the culture of life. Tickets for the breakfast are $7.00, advance sale only. Tickets available at the rectory.

OCTOBER - MONTH OF ROSARY
If all the facts could be written about the blessings which have come to mankind through the centuries as a result of the Rosary, I suspect many libraries would have to be devoted exclusively to such writings. God alone knows what to us are the countless extraordinary favors given to those who implored Mary’s help through the Rosary. Favors abound each moment of the day upon individuals praying their Rosaries to seek assistance from Mary, Queen of the Rosary. Mary, our spiritual Mother will not fail to give ear to the precious persistence of her children when they devoutly recite her rosary.
The rosary honors the greatest woman the world has ever known, or ever will. That alone should be sufficient reason for reciting this simple and sublime prayer often, even daily. But strange to say, through the recitation of the rosary, WE, not Mary, are the biggest beneficiaries.

ROSARY RALLY
The Altoona-Johnstown Curia of the Legion of Mary cordially invites you to attend the annual Rosary Rally which will be held at Holy Name Church, Ebensburg on Sunday, October 11 at 3:00PM. The theme for 2009 is Let Us Pray the Rosary in Our Troubled World. The Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary will be depicted in a living tableau by children from area parishes. We look forward to seeing you during this annual celebration in honor of our Blessed Mother.

YEAR FOR PRIESTS
Allow me to share a few words about the source of priestly vocations. First, fidelity to the teachings of Jesus Christ and the Church is important for the promotion of vocations. The domestic church (i.e. the home) becomes the first seminary. It is a sad fact that only 50% of Catholic young people are approaching the Sacrament of marriage. In all honesty, taking care of the first crisis (dysfunctional family life) will take care of the second crisis (the shortage of priestly vocations). Vocations to the priesthood and religious life come from lifelong, life-giving faithful marriages. Sad to say that the family source can be the greatest resistance to religious vocations.
Here at Holy Name we need to recapture the tone in the Church where the young man isn’t afraid to publicly say “I want to be a priest.” And where family, relatives, parish priests and teachers are openly supportive to this unique calling from God. Our parishioners need to recover the piety and devotion of Catholic spirituality that perhaps past generations somewhat let go. Continue to pray on a daily basis for priestly vocations from this venerable parish.

PARISH HAITI COMMITTEE
The inaugural meeting of the Holy Name Parish Haiti Committee was held on Monday, Oct. 5. The meeting was productive and informative, and served to lay a solid foundation for the future of this new group. The main topic of discussion centered around the issues and benefits of creating a “tourism” program for parishioners to travel to Haiti to see firsthand the challenges faced by the peasants there, and to witness the progress being made in addressing them. The group decided at this time to assess the level of interest in such a program by asking parishioners to indicate their desire to participate in an eventual tour. As of now, there is no specific schedule to begin the tours, but it is envisioned that trips would last from 5 to 7 days. Cost is yet to be determined. Parishioners should keep in mind that this in no way could be considered as “luxury travel”, and is more akin to “roughing it” as one would on a traditional camping trip. If you have interest in traveling to Haiti in the coming years, please complete the form below and submit it in the offertory or drop it off at the rectory. Please note that Indication of interest is not a commitment of any kind on your part. The next meeting of the Parish Haiti Committee has been scheduled for Monday, November 9 at 6pm in the rectory, and new members are always welcome.

ALL SOULS’ DAY
November 2nd, All Souls’ Day, and in fact the entire month of November, have been designated by Catholics as a time of prayer for those who have died. The tradition of special remembrance of the dead is rooted in our belief that the dead will rise again and that all of us will be reunited in the Lord “so in Christ all will come to life again” (Cor. 15,22).
The priests of Holy Name will remember at all Masses during the month of November family members, relatives and friends who have departed from this life. The names of these individuals should be listed on the envelope provided to you in the current packet of church envelopes and returned by October 31st.

LIFELINES - ABORTION STATISTICS
• Since 1973 there have been more than 43 million abortions.
• The annual number of abortions has nearly doubled since Roe v. Wade, from 744,600 to 1,313,300 for 2000.
• For every 1000 live births, there are 306 abortions.
• There are more than 140,000 second and third trimester abortions each year.

ANNUAL MASS ATTENDANCE COUNT
For the following three Sundays, October 11, 18, & 25 a count of all worshipers attending Mass at Holy Name will be taken. The count will take place simultaneous to the offertory collection. The average for the four weeks will indicate the percentage of our total parish membership attending Mass regularly. That statistic will be compared with the results of the counts in the previous years. The final tabulations will be published in a future publication of this bulletin.

CLEANING CEMETERY GROUNDS
If you would like to retain temporary decorations and plantings, please remove and take them home prior to October 31st.

ANGEL FUND NEEDS
Catholic education remains such a vital part of the spiritual life of Holy Name Parish. It remains the highest budget item which requires financial attention and daily concern. Financial support is a necessity from varied sources, namely, parents, parishes, fund raisers, endowment contributions, death remembrances as well as specific scholarship support. For example, the tuition responsibility per child is $900.00. There are families who find it beyond their financial means to honor a $100.00 per month payment for their children. Parishioners who could make a contribution, regardless of the amount, toward a scholarship consideration would be prayerfully and gratefully appreciated.

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME - TIME IS TRULY A GIFT OF LIFE
Every moment of the day is a gift of life to learn how to give of ourselves. Even as Jesus gave of himself, becoming poor that we might become rich (in God) so too, we must be ready to learn to give of ourselves in our time on earth so that we may be rich in heaven.
