RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY OCTOBER 4, 2009
RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY - RESPECT LIFE MONTH
Today, October 4th is Respect Life Sunday and the entire month of October is
designated as Respect Life Month. These are annual reminders for us to become
informed, and to form convictions, that all human life, from conception to
natural death, in all physical and social conditions, is sacred and must be
protected. God is Pro-Life because He created and sustains life. To be
“Pro-Choice” is to be for murder, for abortion, for death, which side are you
on? No one can be neutral or straddle the fence. We have an opportunity this
month to deepen our own “Pro-Life” convictions. And may we all pray that others,
as well, will form similar convictions, moved by God’s Grace and right thinking,
and not merely swayed by emotion. Teach others by your words and example - that
is what God is calling all of us to do if we are to be faithful to His teachings
and laws. Let us be a Faith Community that speaks out boldly and prayerfully
and, ever witnessing in defense of all life, the wonderful life that you have
and enjoy so blissfully!
PRO-LIFE PRAYER BREAKFAST
Citizens Concerned for Human Life will be holding a “Respect Life Prayer
Breakfast” on October 31, 2009 at 10:00 AM at Holy Name Church Hall in
Ebensburg. We are very pleased to have as our speaker this year Sean O’Hare.
Sean is a young, dynamic speaker and entrepreneur. He has founded and owns
multiple businesses. He is also the founder and president of LifeHQ.org, which
seeks to use technology and the media to promote, educate and inform others
about life from conception to natural death. Young and old alike, we all need to
learn how to use technology and media to promote the culture of life. Tickets
for the breakfast are $7.00, advance sale only. Tickets available at the
rectory.
NATIONAL LIFE CHAIN
On October 4, 2009, Respect Life Sunday, there will be a LIFE CHAIN from
1:00-3:00PM along Route 219 and East Carroll St. in Carrolltown. Everyone in our
area is invited to join with us, and with groups of people from across the
United States, as we peacefully, prayerfully and silently stand and demonstrate
our support for the sanctity of human life! Please come and pick up your signs
in front of St. Benedict Church, Carrolltown. Refreshments will be served in the
church hall after the Life Chain. Please join us. Sponsored by Citizens
Concerned for Human Life. For more information, visit www.lifechain.net or
www.prolifecambriasomerset.org.
ROSARY RALLY
The Altoona-Johnstown Curia of the Legion of Mary cordially invites you to
attend the annual Rosary Rally which will be held at Holy Name Church, Ebensburg
on Sunday, October 11 at 3:00PM. The theme for 2009 is Let Us Pray the Rosary in
Our Troubled World. The Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary will be depicted in a
living tableau by children from area parishes. We look forward to seeing you
during this annual celebration in honor of our Blessed Mother.
A SPIRITUALLY REWARDING DEVOTION
Kind words of commendation need to be extended to the number of responsive laity
who were present for the religious services during the days of Eucharistic
Devotion. It has been voiced many times in the past that the parishioners of
Holy Name indeed are a special group of Catholic individuals, people who share
the graces of the Sacraments in a prayerful and frequent manner. May the Lord be
pleased by the example of your Catholic lives.
We need to thank the choirs and all other supporting liturgical ministries.
Truly the days were grace-filled. Behind the scenes were the cooks and
waitresses in the rectory where the meals and service were simply superb. To all
who added to the touch of excellence we express prayerful gratitude, especially
to Fr. Paul Robine, whose spiritual reflections each evening touched the hearts
of all in attendance.
YEAR FOR PRIESTS
A priest is a doctor, a doctor of spiritual things, a doctor of souls. He is a
counselor and a consoler, not always by what he says but just by his presence.
He recognizes when the Spirit is shaking us and moving us out of complacency.
How does one project this varied life of a priest? He is a teacher. He proclaims
the faith, explains it, and helps everyone live it. He knows that his presence
brings Christ’s presence to others. As difficult as it might be, priests are to
project this image of a priest, this role, for our modern American minds. People
today seem to know so little about the life of a priest. Parishioners are asked
to pray daily for vocations to the priesthood and the religious life.
NEW OPPORTUNITY - PARISH HAITI COMMITTEE
To further enhance and support the bond with our sister Parish in Pandiassou, we
have elected to establish a new Parish Haiti Committee. This committee will meet
on a periodic basis, and working hand in hand with Kindred Journey Fund, Inc.,
will identify and implement specific local projects to benefit the peasants of
Haiti and to strengthen our commitment to their cause. An initial task will be
to examine the feasibility and minimum requirements for the establishment of
group tours for parishioners and other interested parties which would allow
people to see first-hand the tremendous daily challenges faced by the Haitian
citizenry, as well to testify to the benefits of current programs financed
through Kindred Journey. The inaugural meeting of this new committee will be
held on Monday, October 5 at 7pm in the rectory conference room. Please consider
this opportunity to offer your time and talent to this very worthwhile endeavor.
Any questions, call Doug Tusing at 472-4257.
ANNUAL MASS ATTENDANCE COUNT
For the following four Sundays, October 4, 11, 18, & 25 a count of all
worshipers attending Mass at Holy Name will be taken. The count will take place
simultaneous to the offertory collection. The average for the four weeks will
indicate the percentage of our total parish membership attending Mass regularly.
That statistic will be compared with the results of the counts in the previous
years. The final tabulations will be published in a future publication of this
bulletin.
STEWARDSHIP OF TIME - YOU ARE THE CHURCH!
As a Christian, you are the church. Realizing this, the questions you must ask
yourself are:
• What am I doing to demonstrate my love of God and to fulfill my obligation as
a member of God’s family?
• Am I as generous toward God’s family as I am my own?
• Do I make excuses, pretending I don’t have time to devote to my church family?
• Or, do I sacrifice a portion of personal pleasures or social life to use my
time in expression of love of God to help in the work of my church family?
LIFELINES
Some of the complications you can have with your abortion: bladder injury, bowel
injury, hemorrhage, infection, laceration of the cervix, more miscarriages
later, post-abortion syndrome, sterility.

CATHOLIC UPDATE: CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
“I’d chose them again!” This is the title of the newest issue of Catholic
Update. Staff in Catholic Schools have made the commitment to embrace and hand
on a common set of Catholic values. Catholic schools infuse faith into every
part of the school day including religion classes, all subject disciplines, even
extracurricular activities. The whole Catholic school community from
administration and teachers to parents, coaches and maintenance crew are there
to support children on a daily basis as they grow in wisdom, age and grace. Here
at Holy Name there are regular opportunities for Mass together, Confession,
weekly adoration as well as formal classroom prayer daily, seasonal devotions
and explicit faith-centered service activities. Catholic Schools, from Pre-K,
elementary, secondary and beyond, offer an outstanding legacy of excellent
educational standards and faith development. Given the opportunity - an
excellent choice!
