BULLETIN NEWS
CHALLENGING WORDS FROM BROTHER FRANCKLIN
It would seem that the intent of Brother Francklin’s most recent letter is to challenge his own people, especially the youth, to seize the moment and really work to build a new Haitian society.
Dear Friends, Our country is at a significant turning point in its history. This is the first time the entire world is here with us, wanting to support us. But there are many things that cannot be done on behalf of someone else, even on behalf of someone you love passionately.... Will we Haitian men and women be up to the task and make the effort to think politically, appropriately, intelligently, to take our country out of the abyss where it is today? ...Haiti is our motherland. But unfortunately many of us live here like people in transit, waiting to go to that “I don’t know where” (better) place, perhaps heaven. But as for me, I accept the fact that we have only one country: Haiti. Now is the time for understanding, for respect for one another, tolerance, and for pitching in. There is no more room for jargon, empty words or teaching others a lesson. We must seize the opportunity which the International Community is giving us to develop Haiti.... In spite of everything, we entertain the hope that things will change. Our experience with our new agricultural support program corroborates this. And, 62% of the Haitian population is under 20 years of age! This is an unbelievable asset. While there is good will there, our young people need to be challenged...to be a “revolutionary” in Haiti... Key words are: order, discipline and principle. (We must become) weaponless, stickless soldiers, ready to serve willingly and responsibly to forge a strong prosperous peasantry. This kind of approach is meant to counteract the mind set that is eroding our sense of patriotism and the role of service for and on behalf of others. (Since) the earthquake...we see a very high number of adults leaving Haiti, and children born in the USA who have been repatriated as American citizens. Who today is ready to die for our Country, (for Haiti)? We have Faith in God, in humankind, in Haiti’s future. Let us hope against all Hope. Francklin.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL - GOAL $90,794.00
To date, 11% of parishioners have contributed to the Annual Catholic Appeal.. This is our “Annual Catholic Opportunity” for building up God’s kingdom through the two dozen ministries of our Local Church. To arrive at our parish Goal, I am asking each family to make a pledge of $75.00. I suggest that you spread your payments over a three-month period if that would be to your convenience. There are those with the financial ability to contribute larger donations. All Holy Name families are requested to contribute their fair share in order to reach this assigned Goal.
Our goal this year is to achieve participation from every parishioner Your participation is vital to the success of the ACA not only for these ministries, but for our own parish as well. Please make a gift that reflects your gratitude for God’s incredible blessings. Join me in returning your completed pledge card by placing it in the collection basket within the next week. If you are unable to make a financial gift, please return your pledge card indicating that; we will see that you do not receive a second request.

INVOICE - BILLS PAYABLE - ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL
Each month and each week scores of Bills Payable for salaries, utilities, supplies, etc. arrive at the pastor’s desk for immediate attention. Every May becomes a Season of Stewardship in behalf of our diocese. For the varied programs provided by the diocese, it depends upon parishes as benefactors in support of these diocesan activities. Yes, an assigned monetary Goal is billed to each parish, that Goal being a percentage of the local church’s income. That assigned parish Goal becomes a Bills Payable, an Invoice expected to be honored by each church Community throughout the eight county region of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown. Please be generous in helping Holy Name to honor its share of diocesan responsibilities.

2010 PARISH CASE
With the price of electricity increasing January 2011, a major project involving church lighting is our 2010 PARISH CASE. This will be the first updating of the higher ceiling fixtures since the construction of the church in 1967. To save future costs this Parish Case project is being considered a mandate. The cost of this project is yet to be determined but we know it will be in the range of tens of thousands of dollars.
Your financial commitment to the Parish Case with contribution made payable to Holy Name Church can be placed in the envelope marked “Parish Case” in the mailing you will receive this week and returned via the collection basket at your earliest convenience. ANY DONATIONS PLACED IN THE PARISH CASE ENVELOPE WILL STAY WITH THE PARISH; DO NOT USE THE PARISH CASE ENVELOPE FOR YOUR DIOCESAN APPEAL CONTRIBUTION. If you have questions please contact the parish secretary before submitting your contributions.

CONGRATULATIONS, LOIS DRAHNAK
With parish pride, we congratulate Lois Drahnak who will be presented the Prince Gallitzin Cross Award by Bishop Joseph on Saturday, June 5, at Mount Aloysius College, Cresson. Nominated by the Parish Council, we believe this honor is well deserved. For over 25 years, Lois has volunteered to take care of food purchase, kitchen and equipment management and the preparation of all major dinners, wedding receptions and socials held in the church hall. She is a long-time member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and many years ago worked with Msgr. Lenz in the diocesan office for the Propagation of the Faith. Her spirit of stewardship is an inspiration for us all. To obtain tickets ($30 per person) for the 5 pm Reception and 6pm Dinner at Cosgrave Center, Mount Aloysius on June 5, contact Mrs. Donna Stoy at 695-5579 before May 21.

CATHOLIC MENS CONFERENCE
The 2010 Conference , entitled “Men of God - Men of Virtue” is scheduled for Saturday, June 12, 2010 at St. Francis University in Loretto. Speakers this year include Richard Lane, Fr. Brian Cavanaugh and Fr. Paul Robine. Each will offer talks of personal testimony to their failures, successes, and richness of their journeys through life - sometimes in harmony with God, other times in desperate search of god’s presence. The day concludes with the Celebration of Mass by Bishop Joseph V. Adamec. We encourage the men of Holy Name, young and old, to reserve this date on your June calendar. Brochures can be found at all church entrances.

OUR LADY'S MONTH
The month of May has always and ever awakened in the hearts of Catholic women and men something beautiful and sublime. Even nature bursts forth in bloom having relaxed its cold grasp upon the forces within its bosom to give new life and beauty to the world about us.
There seems to be a rejuvenation or spirit with us and as though we were little children again, in our spiritual lives, we turn to our Mother. We pray fervently that this blessed month will lift our hearts and thoughts to her who is our great Mediatrix before the throne of God.
Catholics give Mary a place as God himself has given to her beyond and above all created individuals because she was chosen by God to be without sin. She was the instrument by which Christ became human.
That is why we honor our Blessed Lady! This is why we are so devotionally proud of her! She was one of us and in her we are all exalted and lifted up because she who was of the human family was without sin. So then we ask you to join with us in the glorious Marian hymns during the month of May, filling our souls with love for her who is "our fallen nature's solitary boast." In honoring her we come closer to Jesus, Her Divine Son, our God and Risen Savior.

STEWARDSHIP OF TALENT - THERE’S A HITCH TO IT!
With his thumb, a hitchhiker says “You furnish the gas, car, repairs, upkeep and insurance; and I’ll ride with you. But if you have an accident, I’ll sue you for damages!” Sounds pretty one-sided, but one wonders how many hitchhikers there are in churches and organizations. Many seem to say: “You go to the meetings, serve on boards and committees, and take care of the things that need doing and I’ll go along for the ride! If things don’t happen to suit my fancy I will complain, criticize, and probably get out and hitchhike with another group.” Hitchhiker or driver - which kind of member are you?
