BULLETIN NEWS

CATHOLIC MENS CONFERENCE
The 2010 Conference is scheduled for June 12, 2010. We encourage the men of Holy Name, young and old, to reserve this date on your June calendar. Anticipate additional information in the weeks that follow.

ATTENTION MEN: PRAYER GROUP
If you are looking for an action to follow up on the great mission we just had with Father Scott, consider joining the Men's Prayer Group. We meet for an hour at 7am every second Saturday of the month in the library. We discuss the scripture for Sunday's Mass in a low key, friendly environment. All men are welcome! Call Tom Deskevich at 472-5903 or email fellathedog@verizon.net for more information.
OUR LADY'S MONTH
The month of May has always and ever awakened in the hearts of Catholic women and men something beautiful and sublime. Even nature bursts forth in bloom having relaxed its cold grasp upon the forces within its bosom to give new life and beauty to the world about us.
There seems to be a rejuvenation or spirit with us and as though we were little children again, in our spiritual lives, we turn to our Mother. We pray fervently that this blessed month will lift our hearts and thoughts to her who is our great Mediatrix before the throne of God.
Catholics give Mary a place as God himself has given to her beyond and above all created individuals because she was chosen by God to be without sin. She was the instrument by which Christ became human.
That is why we honor our Blessed Lady! This is why we are so devotionally proud of her! She was one of us and in her we are all exalted and lifted up because she who was of the human family was without sin. So then we ask you to join with us in the glorious Marian hymns during the month of May, filling our souls with love for her who is "our fallen nature's solitary boast." In honoring her we come closer to Jesus, Her Divine Son, our God and Risen Savior.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL - GOAL $90,794.00
Today is Commitment Sunday of the Annual Catholic Appeal. This is our “Annual Catholic Opportunity” for building up God’s kingdom through the two dozen ministries of our Local Church. To arrive at our parish Goal, I am asking each family to make a pledge of $75.00. I suggest that you spread your payments over a three-month period if that would be to your convenience. There are those with the financial ability to contribute larger donations. All Holy Name families are requested to contribute their fair share in order to reach this assigned Goal.
Our goal this year is to achieve participation from every parishioner Your participation is vital to the success of the ACA not only for these ministries, but for our own parish as well. Please make a gift that reflects your gratitude for God’s incredible blessings. Join me in returning your completed pledge card by placing it in the collection basket within the next two weeks. If you are unable to make a financial gift, please return your pledge card indicating that; we will see that you do not receive a second request.

2010 PARISH CASE
With the price of electricity increasing January 2011, a major project involving church lighting is our 2010 PARISH CASE. This will be the first updating of the higher ceiling fixtures since the construction of the church in 1967. To save future costs this Parish Case project is being considered a mandate. The cost of this project is yet to be determined but we know it will be in the range of tens of thousands of dollars.
Your financial commitment to the Parish Case with contribution made payable to Holy Name Church can be placed in the envelope marked “Parish Case” in the mailing you will receive this week and returned via the collection basket at your earliest convenience. ANY DONATIONS PLACED IN THE PARISH CASE ENVELOPE WILL STAY WITH THE PARISH; DO NOT USE THE PARISH CASE ENVELOPE FOR YOUR DIOCESAN APPEAL CONTRIBUTION. If you have questions please contact the parish secretary before submitting your contributions.

HAITI UPDATE
The following is a continuation of Brother Francklin’s letter received in April. My dear Friends,
A Haitian knows how to laugh easily, and that confuses and shocks people from other countries who ask: “Why is he laughing?” For Haitian people, the joy of living is contagious and therapeutic. It is the reason there are few insane people and few suicides. Some would say the Haitian people are fatalists, accepting anything. But I reply this is a false assumption. Rather, there is in Haiti a profound wisdom and an unbelievable and realistic ability to wait for the favorable moment to say or do something. A Haitian knows that, whether acting for himself or for his country, he cannot fail and he cannot afford the luxury of throwing himself into ventures with no future. However, the population is in real need of food aid and work in order to be able to take its life in hand, and credit in order to construct earthquake-safe houses. Community soup kitchens are a welcome relief for refugees who have neither a roof over their heads nor a stove, but Cash for Work and Food for Word programs are urgently needed! The State has promised to help families who have lost everything. Will it be able to honor its promises? The people in the back country wait, but who will meet their needs?
Again I express my prayerful gratitude for the ongoing charitable donations in support of the earthquake victims in Haiti, an amount which now has reached $317,193.53.

CHILDREN’S LENTEN SACRIFICES FOR HAITI, HAITI COIN, ETC.
The parishioners will be pleased in being informed about the generosity of youth and adults in response to the needs of indigent children at our Pandiassou Haiti Twin Parish.

Religious Education grades PS-11 $TBA
Holy Name School grades K-8 $5,155.63
Bishop Carroll High School $2,700.00
Church Coin Cans $1,413.00
TOTAL $TBA

With prayerful gratitude!!!!

CARNATION DAYS
Friends of Birthright will be accepting donations in exchange for carnations before and after all Masses May 8th & 9th, Mother’s Day Weekend. Birthright is an interdenominational pregnancy support service that enables women who are facing an unintended pregnancy to choose life for their unborn babies by providing emotional and material support. Birthright helps women in these situations find medical care, clothing, food....even housing. For thousands of women, Birthright is hope. Hope that they, and their unborn children, are not alone. Since 1980, over 5,000 babies have been born in our area under the auspices of Birthright. Your support helps Birthright sustain the gift of life. Thank you.

STEWARDSHIP OF TALENT - A TOTAL COMMITMENT OF WHAT YOU ARE
Think of life as something God has given you to manage or take care of. Everything, after all, comes from God. You may use your talent or ability to achieve material goods; but the talent or ability is a gift from God to begin with. Total commitment involves giving of what you are as well as what you have.

THE LITURGY CORNER
Where are we with the proposed Mass changes in the Roman Missal? The US Conference of Catholic Bishops are awaiting word from the Congregation for Divine Worship in Rome, and will then give directives to publishing companies (for misallettes, etc.), most likely beginning Advent 2011. Most changes are minor, but will require some concentration. For example: “I confess to almighty God , and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault...”

May God bless everyone who participated in these projects.

Award: Holy Name athletes were recognized at the Annual Sports Program on April 26. For the past seventeen years the Paul Kretchman Memorial Award has been presented to the eighth grade athlete who has achieved the highest overall academic average. We congratulate the recipients of this year’s award, Daniel D’Agostini and Margaret Lykens. Mrs. Kretchman and her daughter, Suzanne, presented the award. Not only remembered for his coaching abilities, which he shared with many Holy Name students, and his love of sports; Paul Kretchman is remembered for his love and support of Catholic education.
