BULLETIN NEWS

HAITI NEWS
Through my Haitian contact in St. Petersburg, FL, who is my contact with Brother Francklin, he recently shared with me some informative facts. He is housing 700 people in only 80 tents. The children of these Haitian refugees are now enrolled in the schools around Pandiassou. Each day between 1000 and 1500 children are receiving two meals. Adults transferred from Port-au-Prince are fed three times each day if necessary.
The men are being trained in masonry. Their hand-made cement blocks will be used to construct their personal huts. Other men are being taught the use of soil about the lakes, so that they will be able to provide food for their families. Only one person of the three thousand has requested to return to Port-au-Prince. Our dollars are paying for medical care in Hinche if that becomes a necessity. All the Little Brothers are educating these new neighbors in programs which will lead to self-reliance. AND as of March 18th Kindred Journey has received a total of $285,768.65. May the Lord bless each of you for your generous financial assistance which ultimately will bring about the return of a healthy self-image and self-respect to these penniless Haitian individuals. Again I express profound, prayerful gratitude for your loving and caring support for our brothers and sisters attempting “life” in that devastated country.

IMPORTANCE OF SACRAMENT OF PENANCE
The attitude among many Catholics toward the Sacrament of Reconciliation has changed significantly, and, to be true, not for the best for the church's membership. Ever so many individuals today have a personal psychologist or counselor for the purpose of maintaining focus in their topsy-turvy world. Might we be overlooking the availability of a spiritual resource commonly known as one's Confessor? Peace of soul is a natural by-product of a good confession. The Sacrament of Penance restores friendship with one's Lord and Savior. If it is inner healing that is needed, then Confession is your answer. The Sacrament of Penance contributes to the spiritual development of the Christian life. Jesus provided the avenue to unload guilt. More of our Catholics need to use this instrument of grace in order to experience inner relief and consolation.
Again this Lenten season Confessions will be heard after ALL daily Masses beginning Monday, March 22 until Wednesday of Holy Week inclusive. The journey to Easter must include reconciliation with our Savior. The Adult Lenten Penance Service is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30th at 7:00 PM.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Each Lenten Friday at 7:00 PM parishioners are invited to walk with our suffering Lord to Calvary. What a powerful lesson of Divine love for the individual sinner. The 14 reflections are all scripturally based. Prayed well, the Stations afford a moving meditation of human worth in the eyes of God. Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will follow the Stations each Lenten Friday, except for Good Friday.

FASTING AND ALMS-GIVING: COINS FOR HAITI
Fasting had its practical roots among rural farming communities. When winter storage bins ran dry before the spring crop was available, families banded together with their neighbors, combining whatever food was left and rationing supplies proportionately so no one would be left hungry. This is the spirit in which we enter our Lenten Fast this year. Coins saved by our meager meals can feed thousands of starving children in Haiti. If the whole Church practiced alms giving with great generosity during Lent, think what a difference this could mean for poorer nations like Haiti in the world economy today.

EASTER GENEROSITY
Parishioners are asked to prayerfully consider their Easter Stewardship of Treasure to Holy Name amounting to $40.00. Gratitude is expressed for all past generous sharing of Treasure with this parish family.

GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION
On Good Friday, our parish will take up the annual Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land. Your financial contribution helps to support the struggling Christian community and to protect Christianity’s holiest places. Please be generous.

CHANGE TO NOCTURNAL ADORATION IN APRIL
Please note that Nocturnal Adoration for April will be held on HOLY THURSDAY 8:30 - 9:30 PM (after the 7:00 PM Mass) due to the First Friday of April falling on Good Friday this year.

LIFELINES
“For by Him all things were created...in Him all things exist.” - Colossians 1:16-17
Heavenly Father, I worship you as my Creator and the Creator of all life. You sustain existence in each moment. Hold each pregnant mother in the palm of your hand this day, so that she might be with You every moment - guided by Your Will and protected by Your Love and Mercy.

STEWARDSHIP OF TALENT - THE STRENGTHS YOU POSSESS
In the parable of the talents (Matthew 24:14-30), the master, before going on a journey, entrusted his property to his servants. Two of the servants immediately went out and doubled their investments, but the other servant did nothing. Those who used their talents were justly rewarded, but the servant who did nothing was let go. Take time to reflect on the talents given you. If the Master returned today, what would he say about the way you have used your talents? What kind of responsibility do you feel toward God regarding your talents?

FESTIVAL RAFFLE CHANCES - ONLY 11 WEEKS TO FESTIVAL
Festival Raffle Chances will be mailed on March 31st. To a very large extent the parish depends upon this annual raffle to produce a successful Festival. Each family is requested to personally sell or purchase at least one book (20 chances) on attractive monetary prizes. Parishioners wishing to be responsible for additional books of these chances may so claim them at the rectory. The mailing will also include three raffle tickets from the Basket & Raffle Committee. See article below for further information on Arts & Crafts Raffle Tickets.

3G RAFFLE NEWS
Choices for this year’s 3G Raffle:

1. GAS - $500 of gas from Sheetz, purchased through the Scrip Program
2. GROCERIES - $500 of groceries from Giant Eagle, also purchased through the Scrip Program
3. GET WHAT YOU WANT - $500 in Holy Name Scrip*

*Holy Name Scrip offers a large array of gift certificates for groceries, gas, dining, entertainment, home improvement, department and sporting goods stores, etc. etc. etc.!

FESTIVAL NOODLE MAKING DATES
Volunteers in great number are needed for noodle making on this Wednesday, March 24. Early bird helpers welcome after 7:00 AM. No experience is needed. Come for all or part of the day. Free lunch. Noodles bagged at 8:30 AM on Fridays. Additional noodle dates: April 7 & April 21. Noodles are available for purchase at the rectory Monday thru Friday, 9:00AM-3:00PM. Cost is $3.00 for a 1 lb. bag. FESTIVAL FLEA MARKET -Time for Spring House Cleaning!
This year’s flea market will be bigger and better than ever! Box up items so lids close. No clothing, used stuffed animals or baskets. If possible, store things at home till Thurs. June 3rd when the flea market tent is set up. Or drop off items in the Church Library. Call Sr. Margie if donating small furniture: lamps, end tables, etc. New prize items also needed for men, women and children. Happy spring cleaning!

FOUND - RING
A special ring has been found following the snow melt. The person who lost this ring needs to identify its characteristics and approximate location where lost.

NEW SCHEDULE: LECTORS, EUCH. MIN, GIFT BEARERS, USHERS, GREETERS
All Sunday Lay Ministers can pick up the new schedule in the Narthex this weekend.

COOKIES AND SNACKS NEEDED
Cookies and snacks of all kinds are needed for Easter Vigil and for the up-coming Parish Mission April 18-21. Food items can be dropped off in the Church Library or taken to the rectory during office hours. We have space to freeze and store these items until needed. Contact Sr. Margie

RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION: THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
As of Holy Thursday, April 1, the option to receive from the chalice the Blood of Christ will be restored as common practice. We encourage parishioners to do so. The Sign of Peace as a simple handshake will also resume. (Waiving to friends across the Church is not an appropriate liturgical gesture for the Sign of Peace.) As of Easter, the full band of Eucharistic Ministers assigned to each Mass will be needed for the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ. It is presumed that when a person is not feeling well, they would know to refrain from drinking from the Communion Cup.

PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN (VIRTUS) TRAINING
A Protecting God’s Children training session will be offered on Wednesday, April 7 in the church hall. Anyone who works with or chaperones the youth of our parish, in any capacity, is required to take this training. It is only necessary to take this training once. The three hour session will begin promptly at 6:00 PM. You may register prior to the session online at www.virtus.org. For questions, call Sarah Zearing 472-5631 or Susie McCombie 472-7893.

CENSUS 2010 IS IMPORTANT
The census is a count of everyone residing in the United States. Every year, the federal government allocates more than $400 billion to states and local communities based, in part, on census data. The census affects our representation in Congress and the state legislature, county and municipal voting districts. An accurate count is critical for our community. Complete the census questionnaire and be counted in 2010. Log on to www.2010census.gov for more information.

PARISH MISSION 2010 - WELCOME FR. SCOTT SEETHALER
Our Parish Mission, April 18-21, will be conducted by Fr. Scott Seethaler, a Capuchin-Franciscan priest from his native city of Pittsburgh. A man of warmth, humor and a great love for Jesus, Fr. Scott has been involved with the formation of seminarians and novices and has worked with the poor at the Catholic Spanish Center in Washington, D.C. He has served in parishes and taught at Slippery Rock and Duquesne Universities. Presently, he travels throughout the U.S. giving parish missions and retreats. His radio program, Joyful Reflections, airs 6 days a week in Western PA, and he has published books as well as spiritual talks on CD and DVD. In 2008, Fr. Scott received the Archbishop Donald Wuerl Flame of Hope Award for his years of preaching and spreading the Good News, and for his ministry to the poor at the Anne Seethaler Hospital which he founded in Oaxaca, Mexico.

EASTER MEMORIAL
We will continue the tradition here at Holy Name of memorializing the deceased with potted Easter flowers within our church sanctuary during the Easter Season. If you wish to remember loved ones in this manner, please print their names and yours on the form below. Place the form in an envelope with a $10.00 donation and return it either by way of the collection basket or directly to the rectory NO LATER THAN MONDAY, MARCH 22 so that all memorialized names can be printed in the March 28th (Palm Sunday) bulletin.
