IMPORTANCE OF SACRAMENT OF PENANCE
The attitude among many Catholics toward the Sacrament of Reconciliation has
changed significantly, and, to be true, not for the best for the church's
membership. Ever so many individuals today have a personal psychologist or
counselor for the purpose of maintaining focus in their topsy-turvy world. Might
we be overlooking the availability of a spiritual resource commonly known as
one's Confessor? Peace of soul is a natural by-product of a good confession. The
Sacrament of Penance restores friendship with one's Lord and Savior. If it is
inner healing that is needed, then Confession is your answer. The Sacrament of
Penance contributes to the spiritual development of the Christian life. Jesus
provided the avenue to unload guilt. More of our Catholics need to use this
instrument of grace in order to experience inner relief and consolation.
Again this Lenten season Confessions will be heard after ALL daily Masses
beginning Monday, March 22 until Wednesday of Holy Week inclusive. The journey
to Easter must include reconciliation with our Savior. The Adult Lenten Penance
Service is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30th at 7:00 PM.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Each Lenten Friday at 7:00 PM parishioners are invited to walk with our
suffering Lord to Calvary. What a powerful lesson of Divine love for the
individual sinner. The 14 reflections are all scripturally based. Prayed well,
the Stations afford a moving meditation of human worth in the eyes of God.
Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will follow the Stations each Lenten
Friday, except for Good Friday.
FASTING AND ALMS-GIVING: COINS FOR HAITI
Fasting had its practical roots among rural farming communities. When winter
storage bins ran dry before the spring crop was available, families banded
together with their neighbors, combining whatever food was left and rationing
supplies proportionately so no one would be left hungry. This is the spirit in
which we enter our Lenten Fast this year. Coins saved by our meager meals can
feed thousands of starving children in Haiti. If the whole Church practiced alms
giving with great generosity during Lent, think what a difference this could
mean for poorer nations like Haiti in the world economy today.
CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES COLLECTION
Today, we take up the Catholic Relief Services Collection. You are invited to
give hope to Jesus in disguise. Give hope to the community that has lost its
livelihood to a crop disease. Give hope to the refugee child, separated from her
mother. Give hope to the immigrant, trying to keep faith alive in a foreign
land. The Catholic Relief Services Collection helps to fund programs that give
hope to refugees, immigrants, and the impoverished, including victims of war,
natural disaster, and drought. Through humanitarian, economic, pastoral, and
advocacy efforts, The Catholic Relief Services Collection gives hope. Please be
generous in today’s collection.
CATHOLIC UPDATE: EVOLUTION
On magazine racks. Our times demand that we see and appreciate the hand of God
in the great work of creation. In 1950, Pope Pius XII’s encyclical Humani
Generis stated that “biological evolution is compatible with Christian faith.”
Pope John Paul II agreed in 1996, saying “new scientific knowledge has led us to
realize that the theory of evolution is no longer a mere hypothesis.” So how are
Catholics to interpret the six-day account of creation in the Book of Genesis?
Catholic theologian and scientist Francisco Ayala explains, “Properly
understood, science and religious belief need not be in contradiction because
each concerns a different matter.” Genesis is Divinely inspired, revealing that
all creation including human beings came into being by the very word of the only
living and true God; that creation is good, has order and boundaries, and
reflects the goodness and wisdom of the God who created it. Genesis does not
explain how creation unfolded; rather, Genesis reveals the God of all creation.
Speaking on the Year of the Priest, Pope Benedict XVI said “The role of
priesthood is to consecrate the world...(that) in the end we shall achieve a
true cosmic liturgy, where the cosmos becomes a living host.” Catholic Update
ends with a provocative question: Does science help your faith?

Church Library or taken to the rectory during office hours. We have space to

LIFELINES
Heavenly Father, Your design of our development is truly full of wonder and awe!
Forgive those who set arbitrary time limits on when a preborn is a human person
based on our ever-changing medical ability to keep a fetus alive outside the
womb. How is it that our limited and changing abilities, and our
incomprehensible understanding of the mystery of creation, should determine
human life?

STEWARDSHIP OF TALENT - THE USE OF TALENT AS STEWARDSHIP
What kind of Christian are you? A lot of Christians are like wheelbarrows: not
good unless pushed. Some are like canoes: need to be paddled. Some are like
kites: if you don’t keep a string on them, they fly away. Some are like kittens:
contented when petted. Some are like footballs: you can’t tell which way they
bounce next. Some are like balloons: full of air and ready to blow up. Some are
like trailers: they have to be pulled. Some are like neon lights: keep going on
and off. But some are like a good watch: open of face, pure gold, quietly busy
and full of good works!
Some work hard to develop their talents. They act as if they are accountable for
their abilities and that doing less than their best would be letting someone
down. Some talk about the use of talents as a “stewardship.” They believe that
stewardship relates to every area of their life. What kind of Christian are you?
