HAITI NEWS
Hundreds of thousands of Haitians living in tents or other makeshift dwellings
are now facing an additional hardship, namely, rain on a regular basis. These
tents, providing for temporary housing, are located in dirt-field locations.
Rain causes extreme mud conditions, yes, inside and outside their dwellings.
As of March 1st, Kindred Journey Inc. has received $250,810.15. The donors
surprise us from time to time. This quarter million dollars has been received
from throughout the country as well as locally. The Penn Cambria Middle School
in Gallitzin recently sent a check in the amount of $1,260.00. This is not the
only Public School having their students reaching out to the earthquake families
in Haiti.
CAMBRIA CARE CENTER (LAUREL CREST MANOR)
It is difficult to believe that Grane Health Corp, which purchased Laurel Crest
Manor, now known as Cambria Care Center has eliminated the Pastoral Care
Department. So the Franciscan Fathers from Loretto and the Sisters of Saint Ann
from Ebensburg are no longer employed at this institution housing hundreds of
residents, the majority of these being of the Catholic faith. The Franciscan
Fathers have provided priestly services there for over fifty (50) years. They,
along with the Sisters of Saint Ann, received no formal correspondence that
their services were no longer needed. It is cause to question the lack of
professional wisdom upon its new leadership.
Since this Care Center falls within the territorial boundaries of Holy Name
Parish, the local church has a canonical requirement to service the Catholic
population in residence there. The Bishop has no deacon or priest to assume full
ministerial duties at Cambria Care Center. To the credit of Holy Name
Parishioners, who are already commissioned as Eucharistic Ministers, 16 of them,
divided into four groups, will distribute Holy Communion each Wednesday or
assist at the monthly Mass scheduled on the third Wednesday. These services were
initiated this past Wednesday after a two month “contentious discussion” among
many parties local and otherwise.
TIME CHANGE
Please note that all Sunday Masses next weekend (March 14h) will be on Daylight
Savings Time. Please remember to turn your clocks ahead one hour Saturday
evening, March 13th.
IMPORTANCE OF SACRAMENT OF PENANCE
The attitude among many Catholics toward the Sacrament of Reconciliation has
changed significantly, and, to be true, not for the best for the church's
membership. Ever so many individuals today have a personal psychologist or
counselor for the purpose of maintaining focus in their topsy-turvy world. Might
we be overlooking the availability of a spiritual resource commonly known as
one's Confessor? Peace of soul is a natural by-product of a good confession. The
Sacrament of Penance restores friendship with one's Lord and Savior. If it is
inner healing that is needed, then Confession is your answer. The Sacrament of
Penance contributes to the spiritual development of the Christian life. Jesus
provided the avenue to unload guilt. More of our Catholics need to use this
instrument of grace in order to experience inner relief and consolation.
Again this Lenten season Confessions will be heard after ALL daily Masses
beginning Monday, March 22 until Wednesday of Holy Week inclusive. The journey
to Easter must include reconciliation with our Savior. The Adult Lenten Penance
Service is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30th at 7:00 PM.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Each Lenten Friday at 7:00 PM parishioners are invited to walk with our
suffering Lord to Calvary. What a powerful lesson of Divine love for the
individual sinner. The 14 reflections are all scripturally based. Prayed well,
the Stations afford a moving meditation of human worth in the eyes of God.
Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will follow the Stations each Lenten
Friday, except for Good Friday.
FASTING AND ALMS-GIVING: COINS FOR HAITI
Fasting had its practical roots among rural farming communities. When winter
storage bins ran dry before the spring crop was available, families banded
together with their neighbors, combining whatever food was left and rationing
supplies proportionately so no one would be left hungry. This is the spirit in
which we enter our Lenten Fast this year. Coins saved by our meager meals can
feed thousands of starving children in Haiti. If the whole Church practiced alms
giving with great generosity during Lent, think what a difference this could
mean for poorer nations like Haiti in the world economy today.
LENTEN MEAGER MEAL
This Sunday, March 7, 5:PM in the Church Hall. The Meager Meal, a simple meal of
soup and bread, is a reminder of our solidarity with the poor, especially in
Haiti. No charge; a free will offering is invited for “Kindred Journey” Haiti.
Late-comers still welcome.
CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES COLLECTION
Next weekend, our parish will take up the Catholic Relief Services Collection.
This Collection helps to fund six Catholic organizations that improve the
quality of life and protect human dignity. Your gift will support agricultural
development to strengthen economies and create food sustainability, provide
outreach services to survivors of human trafficking, and supply pastoral care
and advocacy for immigrants and refugees. By helping the marginalized and
impoverished, you give hope to Jesus in disguise. Please be charitable in next
weekend’s Collection. Envelopes can be found in your March packet for this
Collection.
CHOIR NEWS
The Women’s Choir will rehearse on Monday, March 8th (instead of March 9th) at
7:30PM and on Tuesday, March 16th at 7:30PM. The Combined Choir will rehearse on
Monday, March 15th at 7:30PM.
LIFELINES - PRAYER FOR LIFE SCIENCES
Eternal God and source of all life, send your Holy Spirit on those who labor in
the world of science and medicine. Give them knowledge of the natural world and
wisdom to use their insights to enhance life, not destroy it. Help us all to see
that a just and humane world cannot be built on the destruction of the most
vulnerable among us. May we ever strive to promote health and vitality, and
always remember that life and death are in your hands. Amen.
ST. VINCENT DEPAUL EASTER FOOD DRIVE
Please remember our hurting neighbors this Holy Season by filling our Food Bags
for their Easter dinner. The bags will be distributed at all Masses this
weekend. A $5.00 donation will help defray the cost of hams. May Our Lord bless
you as you are in our prayers for your continued support and generosity.

FESTIVAL FLEA MARKET -Time for Spring House Cleaning!

lids close. No clothing, used stuffed animals or baskets. If possible, store
things at home till Thurs. June 3rd when the flea market tent is set up. Or
continue to drop off items in the Church Library. Call Sr. Margie first if
planing to donate small furniture: lamps, end tables, etc. New items for men,
women and children also needed for festival prizes. Happy spring cleaning!
COOKIES AND SNACKS NEEDED
Cookies and snacks of all kinds are needed for Easter Vigil and for the
up-coming Parish Mission April 18-21. Food items can be dropped off in the
Church Library or taken to the rectory during office hours. We have space to
freeze and store these items until needed. Contact Sr. Margie
STEWARDSHIP OF TALENT - MANY OPPORTUNITIES ARE OPEN TO THE LAITY
Christ died upon the Cross for each one of us and we are very important in His
sight. Each one of us can and should return this love to Christ by being a
co-worker with Him in our church family. If we are sincere and honest we must
acknowledge that all that we have, all that we are and all that we shall ever
have, are God’s gifts to us. Therefore, in goodness to us, each one of us should
volunteer to be a co-worker with Christ by participating in church activities,
giving of our talent.
RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION: THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
As of the Easter Vigil, April 3, the option to receive from the chalice the
Blood of Christ will be restored as common practice. We encourage parishioners
to do so. The Sign of Peace as a simple handshake will also resume. (Waiving to
friends across the Church is not an appropriate liturgical gesture for the Sign
of Peace.) As of Easter, the full band of Eucharistic Ministers assigned to each
Mass will be needed for the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ. It is
presumed that when a person is not feeling well, they would know to refrain from
drinking from the Communion Cup.
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION RETREAT
There will be a retreat for children in the First Holy Communion class and their
parents on Saturday, March 13 from 9:00AM to Noon in the Holy Name Church Hall.
Scapular and Bread Ceremonies will be celebrated at this retreat. Please bring
