HAITI NEWS Six months after January’s earthquake devastated Haiti, killing some 230,000 people and injuring 300,000, the process of reconstruction appears to have come to a halt except in the region of Pandiassou under the direct leadership of Brother Francklin Armand, the friend of this parish and its pastor. We know that billions of dollars have been pledged but have yet to arrive. For the most part, for the nation in general, decisions as to how to spend the money have not begun to be made. We know also that the three containers sent by the Community of the Word sisters took months before they were cleared through Customs. What a blessing for the contributors to Kindred Journey. We simply wire-transfer our monetary funds to Brother Francklin’s account in St. Petersburg, FL. He immediately builds additional nutritional centers while purchasing materials to move tent people at our Mission Station into permanent dwellings. Pray for our Haitian friends as they now are experiencing the season of tropical rains. Tents are not providing adequate protection from the reality of the six month rainy season. ANOINTING OF THE CHRONICALLY ILL AND AGED- SACRAMENT OF THE SICK The purpose of the sacrament, from its very origins as found in the Letter of St. James, was not to be a help to those dying, but to those who were sick. It is meant as a way of showing the sick in their sufferings that Christ is with them, uniting their sufferings to his. The union between Christ and the members of the church is emphasized. We all know that there is a connection between the physical and the spiritual aspects of the human person. To give spiritual care when one is sick touches also their physical well-being. How difficult it is to separate the two! This sacrament of the anointing of the sick is an expression of our faith that it is the whole person who is loved by God and redeemed. Who should be anointed? The rubrics are clear: those who are seriously impaired by sickness or old age should receive this sacrament. One should not wait until people are dying to suggest that they receive this sacrament. Nor is it necessary to be scrupulous about who should receive it. A prudent judgement is enough. The church does not want the sacrament to be administered to anyone who asks for it because of a slight headache or something insignificant. The person should be seriously sick, but not necessarily in danger of death. The annual Anointing Service is scheduled for Wednesday, July 28 during a 7:00 PM Mass. We ask all parishioners burdened with chronic illness and those 65 years and older to reserve that date for the Lord to share His special grace with you through the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Our guest speaker with be Fr. David Roesch. It will be a most satisfying and rewarding evening for those who will be present. COOKIES NEEDED FOLLOWING ANOINTING MASS Snacks would be appreciated for the reception in the Narthex following the evening Anointing Mass on Wed, July 28. Cookies, cheese and crackers, vegetable/fruit platters, chips etc can be dropped off in the Church Library that day. Contact Sr. Margie. Thank you! CHURCH IMPROVEMENTS We cannot give you a date for the completion of the changeover of the church lighting system. Extreme caution is being applied in the specific wattage determined for various sections of the church. Thus far, 100, 70 and 39 wattage bulbs have been installed. Our parishioners are being gifted with FREE labor on this project. Members of the Property and Grounds Committee who are donating their time and talent find extreme satisfaction with the improvement of lumens in those sections originally addressed. A contract has been approved and signed by the diocese to finalize the replacement of air-conditioning equipment. A year ago only the external units were replaced. Now having concern with leakage of FREON from tubing internally and with the approval of both the Finance Committee and Property and Grounds Committee a contract with Marc-Service from Windber PA has been signed for $105,600 to replace the entirety of the internal mechanism. Special gratitude to parishioners for their donation to the 2010 Parish Case. This too will be a cash and carry case, that is, no need to incur debt. FESTIVAL 2011 The plans are in the beginning stages and already are exciting! Festival 2011 represents a milestone for Holy Name as well as for your pastor! ELEMENTARY CCD TEACHERS: THE PARISH NEEDS YOU More volunteers are needed in a variety of services for the Fall Religious Education program. Besides the traditional role of catechist, we are looking for teaching-teams, classroom aides (ideal for newly confirmed seniors or volunteer moms/dads), CCD assistants to give one-on-one attention to students as needed, professional teachers willing to mentor new teacher-volunteers at their convenience, even hall monitors to assist with snacks or an occasional sick student or to make phone calls, etc. Those willing to be a substitute CCD teacher periodically are always welcome and much appreciated! If you see yourself being able to contribute to the Fall program in any of these creative ways, please contact Mary Harvey (Elementary Program) by calling the rectory office at 472-7244. The parish needs you! JR/SR. HIGH CCD NEWS - TEACHERS NEEDED We hope everyone is enjoying their Summer!! We need a number of teachers for grades 7th - 11th Sunday morning from 10 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. You don't need to know everything about the catholic faith. We are here to help you. Please consider this important ministry of giving your time to the youth of our parish and passing your faith onto them. Call Nancy or Kerry McCulley at 241-7809 for more information ADULT SCRIPTURE CLASSES “A Walk through the Bible” with Sr. Margie. Have a few questions? This general inquiry class is for you. Wed., July 28 at 7 PM in the Church Library. For more information, call Rose Battista 472-6580 or Sr. Margie 472-8315. (RCIA stands for Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults.) STEWARDSHIP OF TALENT Who owns our talents and how are we to use them until Christ returns to hold us accountable? You may have a talent sitting inside your heart that you can use to serve your church. Discover what the Holy Spirit is calling you to do with that ability! THE LITURGY CORNER Change is always a challenge. When we begin to use the new translation of the Roman Missal, some Mass prayers will be in longer sentence form with broader vocabulary than we are presently used to in everyday conversation. This is to mirror the more formal language of prayer expressed in the ancient rites. The adjustments will take a little effort and concentration, but the results will be worth it. We will have the missalette to lead us along until repeated usage of the new texts make them familiar again. These changes will not begin until Advent of 2011. APEX NEWS 1.
