ANOINTING OF THE CHRONICALLY ILL AND AGED- SACRAMENT OF THE SICK The purpose of the sacrament, from its very origins as found in the Letter of St. James, was not to be a help to those dying, but to those who were sick. It is meant as a way of showing the sick in their sufferings that Christ is with them, uniting their sufferings to his. The union between Christ and the members of the church is emphasized. We all know that there is a connection between the physical and the spiritual aspects of the human person. To give spiritual care when one is sick touches also their physical well-being. How difficult it is to separate the two! This sacrament of the anointing of the sick is an expression of our faith that it is the whole person who is loved by God and redeemed. Who should be anointed? The rubrics are clear: those who are seriously impaired by sickness or old age should receive this sacrament. One should not wait until people are dying to suggest that they receive this sacrament. Nor is it necessary to be scrupulous about who should receive it. A prudent judgement is enough. The church does not want the sacrament to be administered to anyone who asks for it because of a slight headache or something insignificant. The person should be seriously sick, but not necessarily in danger of death. The annual Anointing Service is scheduled for Wednesday, July 28 during a 7:00 PM Mass. We ask all parishioners burdened with chronic illness and those 65 years and older to reserve that date for the Lord to share His special grace with you through the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Our guest speaker with be Fr. David Roesch. It will be a most satisfying and rewarding evening for those who will be present. NEWS ABOUT HAITI To date, since the earthquake of January 12th, $300,000.00 from the Kindred Journey Fund has been released to Brother Francklin. Another seven nutritional centers (over and above the 16 centers which have been active for many years) are being opened so that 1500 children will be given two meals a day on four days of each week. The number of children being fed on this schedule increased by 500 since the earthquake. The nutritional centers now are also providing hot meals to certain parents who are completely destitute. Brother Francklin has opened a number of soup kitchens which provide food for indigent adults. To this day the Little Brothers of the Incarnation (Br. Francklin’s community) is the sole source of lake construction for the nation of Haiti. 128 lakes have been constructed which have provided tons of fish (carp and tilapia) and water for gardening where tons of vegetables are being harvested. The pumps are working well and giving good results. Brother Francklin extends his gratitude to all contributors to Kindred Journey. He insists that this Haiti Mission group from Ebensburg has been a providential gift from God for the Haitian indigent peasants. CHURCH TEACHING - CREMATION Cremation in our church was once forbidden. The law permitting it changed in 1964. In 1997 regulations were relaxed even further, allowing funeral Masses with the ashes present. For Catholics, two cautions need to be considered. First, our church makes clear a STRONG preference for the traditional custom of burying the BODY in a tomb. The funeral rites are more for the living than the dead. We need the reminders that confront us in the presence of the body of a family member or friend. The church’s funeral liturgy, from the Wake at the funeral parlor, the Mass and the cemetery burial spell out those reminders in the context of Jesus’ own death and resurrection. The second concern involves the family members left behind that they are spiritually and emotionally comfortable with the final funeral arrangements. Ashes do not spiritually impact family members as do the presence of the deceased body. The church teaches that cremains deserve the same respect as does the body of the deceased, that is, they are to be interred immediately following the funeral rites. Cremains are NEVER to be kept at a family residence or scattered at sea or a land site. Nor are the ashes EVER to be shared either with jewelry or among family members. NOVENA IN HONOR OF SAINT ANN The Sisters of Saint Ann announce their annual Novena in honor of their Patroness Saint Ann to be held at Mount Saint Ann, 1120 N. Center St., Ebensburg beginning Sunday, July 18th until Monday, July 26th, the Feast Day of Saints Ann and Joachim. The Eucharist celebration and devotion will be held every evening at 7:00PM at the outside shrine (weather permitting). FESTIVAL 2011 Yes, Festival 2010 was just over and now Festival 2011! Yes, yes, yes! But there is a reason. The Festival of June 3, 4 & 5, 2011 will be another milestone in the history of this church, the 50th year of the Festival! And, Monsignor Gaus was involved in the initial Festivals, so once again we have to celebrate another milestone in the history of this church and in the ministry of Monsignor. So start watching the weekly bulletin for notices about what is being planned because the work has already started! This will in so many ways be a bang up Festival the likes of which we have not seen. You will be surprised! SUMMER: PROPER CLOTHING FOR CHURCH ATTENDANCE Our present day culture, perhaps influenced by the internet, has lowered standards for the public’s expectations for modest attire when attending liturgical prayer, especially weekend Mass obligations. The lowered female necklines and higher skirt levels have been a source of scandal for some and an occasion of sin for others. Parents in particular are requested to oversee the proper dress for their children not only when attending Mass but also for their presence at other public events. FLOWER GARDEN AND PLANTS The butterfly garden facing Horner Street and the beautiful flowers and manicured shrubs surrounding the church have generated many appreciative compliments from both parishioners and visitors to Holy Name Church. Again we express our gratitude to those volunteers who unselfishly give hours of their time every week to flowers, shrubs and lawn about our premises. ELEMENTARY CCD TEACHERS: THE PARISH NEEDS YOU More volunteers are needed in a variety of services for the Fall Religious Education program. Besides the traditional role of catechist, we are looking for teaching-teams, classroom aides (ideal for newly confirmed seniors or volunteer moms/dads), CCD assistants to give one-on-one attention to students as needed, professional teachers willing to mentor new teacher-volunteers at their convenience, even hall monitors to assist with snacks or an occasional sick student or to make phone calls, etc. Those willing to be a substitute CCD teacher periodically are always welcome and much appreciated! STEWARDSHIP OF TALENT - LITTLE SEEDS GROW INTO BETTER THINGS Stewardship asks us, not are our talents big enough, but how do we faithfully use the talents we have, no matter how insignificant they may seem. By thinking our gifts must be perfect, we overlook important ways we can serve our church. THE LITURGY CORNER Change is always a challenge. When we begin to use the new translation of the Roman Missal, some Mass prayers will be in longer sentence form with broader vocabulary than we are presently used to in everyday conversation. This is to mirror the more formal language of prayer expressed in the ancient rites. The adjustments will take a little effort and concentration, but the results will be worth it. We will have the missalette to lead us along until repeated usage of the new texts make them familiar again. These changes will not begin until Advent of 2011.
