INDEPENDENCE DAY This Sunday, Americans will celebrate Independence Day, a time filled with picnics, fireworks and other happy events. The faithful may take a moment to say thanks for the many freedoms that were set in motion on that first Independence Day more than two centuries ago. But it would also be appropriate to take a little time to reflect on independence’s partner - responsibility. For without a deep sense of responsibility over the past 200 years plus, it’s likely that Americans would not have much independence to celebrate in 2010. Assume responsibilities: • To become more active in exercising our political rights, especially in petitioning our current representatives in government for legislation that includes a sense of moral values. • To search for, and then act on, ways that we can personally influence a more just society that treats all of God’s children with respect, regardless of the color of their skin, their country of origin or the religion they profess. Reflecting on responsibilities such as these could make this Independence Day especially meaningful. Mass on the legal holiday, July 5th, will be held at 8:00 AM only. A PRAYER FOR OUR NATION ON THE 4th of JULY Lord of Nations, how grateful we are for our great country and the blessings you have lavished upon us. As we celebrate our National Declaration of Independence, may we also humbly acknowledge our dependence upon you. Purify our hearts, that we may worship you, the Giver, rather than the gifts. May our laws not oppose your will. May our freedoms never oppress others. May our national wealth lead to a stewardship of responsible sharing. May our access to power never be invoked to exploit the weakness of others. And may we never take your presence and your love for granted. This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen. ENDOWMENT FOR HOLY NAME SCHOOL - FUTURE SECURITY Who doesn’t love little children? Jesus took them in his arms and blessed them. Might that be indicative that he loved them? We know that he did!!! If he reached out in a caring gesture toward children, could that have been a teaching lesson for us to emulate? Your pastor is concerned about the financial viability of Holy Name School thirty, forty and fifty years from now. All universities and colleges depend heavily on their endowment assets, that is, financial assets that cannot be spent except for the interest accrued by these investments. Such financial arrangements are known as endowments for that particular educational institution. There are childless adults who should seriously consider adopting children for all eternity by contributing toward an endowment so that future young Catholics will have the privilege of an education at Holy Name School. This personal decision would be an expression of love for children who were not one’s blessing on this earthly level. Those capable of responding to this request from your pastor should speak to Monsignor or your attorney if an addendum to one’s Last Will and Testament is necessary. Please consider supporting from your heavenly home an endowment for children attending Holy Name School and this financial aide knowing no limitations in time. ANOINTING OF THE CHRONICALLY ILL AND AGED- SACRAMENT OF THE SICK The purpose of the sacrament, from its very origins as found in the Letter of St. James, was not to be a help to those dying, but to those who were sick. It is meant as a way of showing the sick in their sufferings that Christ is with them, uniting their sufferings to his. The union between Christ and the members of the church is emphasized. We all know that there is a connection between the physical and the spiritual aspects of the human person. To give spiritual care when one is sick touches also their physical well-being. How difficult it is to separate the two! This sacrament of the anointing of the sick is an expression of our faith that it is the whole person who is loved by God and redeemed. Who should be anointed? The rubrics are clear: those who are seriously impaired by sickness or old age should receive this sacrament. One should not wait until people are dying to suggest that they receive this sacrament. Nor is it necessary to be scrupulous about who should receive it. A prudent judgement is enough. The church does not want the sacrament to be administered to anyone who asks for it because of a slight headache or something insignificant. The person should be seriously sick, but not necessarily in danger of death. The annual Anointing Service is scheduled for Wednesday, July 28 during a 7:00 PM Mass. We ask all parishioners burdened with chronic illness and those 65 years and older to reserve that date for the Lord to share His special grace with you through the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. It will be a most satisfying and rewarding evening for those who will be present. NOVENA IN HONOR OF SAINT ANN The Sisters of Saint Ann announce their annual Novena in honor of their Patroness Saint Ann to be held at Mount Saint Ann, 1120 N. Center St., Ebensburg beginning Sunday, July 18th until Monday, July 26th, the Feast Day of Saints Ann and Joachim. The Eucharist celebration and devotion will be held every evening at 7:00PM at the outside shrine (weather permitting). JEWISH VIEW ON CATHOLICS Excerpts of an article written by non-Catholic Sam Miller - a prominent Cleveland Jewish businessman: “Why would newspapers carry on a vendetta on one of the most important institutions that we have today in the United States, namely the Catholic Church? Do you know - the Catholic Church educates 2.6 million students everyday at the cost to that Church of 10 billion dollars, and a savings on the other hand to the American taxpayer of 18 billion dollars. The graduates go on to graduate studies at the rate of 92%. The Church has 230 colleges and universities in the U.S. with an enrollment of 700,000 students. The Catholic Church has a non-profit hospital system of 637 hospitals, which account for hospital treatment of 1 out of every 5 people - not just Catholics - in the United States today. But the press is vindictive and trying to totally denigrate in every way the Catholic Church in this country. They have blamed the disease of pedophilia on the Catholic Church, which is as irresponsible as blaming adultery on the institution of marriage. Let me give you some figures that Catholics should know and remember. For example, 12% of the 300 Protestant clergy surveyed admitted to sexual intercourse with a parishioner; 38% acknowledged other inappropriate sexual contact in a study by the United Methodist Church, 41.8% of clergy women reported unwanted sexual behavior; 17% of laywomen have been sexually harassed. Meanwhile, 1.7% of the Catholic clergy have been found guilty of pedophilia. 10% of the Protestant ministers have been found guilty of pedophilia. This is not a Catholic problem. A study of American priests showed that most are happy in the priesthood and find it even better than expected, and that most, if given the choice, would choose to be priests again in the face of all this obnoxious PR the church has been receiving. The Catholic Church is bleeding from self-inflicted wounds. The agony that Catholics have felt and suffered is not necessarily the fault of the Church. You have been hurt by a small number of wayward priests that have probably been totally weeded out by now. Walk with your shoulders high and your head higher. Be a proud member of the most important non-governmental agency in the United States. Then remember what Jeremiah said: ‘Stand by the roads, and look and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is and walk in it, and find rest in your souls.’ Be proud to speak up for your faith with pride and reverence and learn what your Church does for all other religions. Be proud that you’re a Catholic.” ADULT SCRIPTURE CLASSES: “A Walk through the Bible”with Sr. Margie. Tuesday July 6, 7:00-8:30PM, Church Hall. The next series begins August 17, continuing the journey of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. THE LITURGY CORNER What of musical compositions and the new translation of the Roman Missal? The U.S Conference of Catholic Bishops has directed composers to implement the new translation of the acclamations (Greetings/Dialogues; Holy, Holy; Memorial Acclamations; Great Doxology (Amen); the Glory to God and the Creed). Once the new Roman Missal is promulgated (probably Advent, 2011), only musical settings using the revised translations can be used at Liturgy. CATHOLIC UPDATE: CATHOLICS AND HEALTHCARE In addition to the need for pastoral care and reception of the sacraments when sick and hospitalized, one of the important reasons for the very existence of Catholic hospitals inthis country has been the care of the poor. This Catholic Update reflects on the connection between health care and social justice. In fact, the Church’s involvement in health-care systems long precedes the United States. During the Middle Ages, various religious groups lived among the sick poor, caring for them, much the way we remember the ministry of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Lay members who followed the spirit of St. Francis, called the Third Order or Secular Franciscans, are legendary in this area, such as St. Elizabeth of Hungary who devoted her whole life to the sick poor. In the 18th-19th centuries, religious communities of women were founded specifically for caring for the sick. The Ursulines established New Orleans’s Charity Hospital, often called Hospital for the Poor, the second oldest hospital in the United States. Education and health became hallmarks of the Church’s concern, with 75 Catholic hospitals by 1875 and over 400 by the 20th century. This article addresses the cultural challenges and Ethical and Religious Directives (ERD) which must shape our Catholic response of care for the sick poor today. PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN TRAINING (VIRTUS) A Protecting God’s Children training session will be offered on Tuesday, July 13th at Holy Name School. Any school, religious education or youth activity volunteer must receive this training. The session will begin at 10:00AM and is approximately 3 hours long. Register prior to the session online at www.virtus.org. For questions, call Sarah Zearing at 472-5631. STEWARDSHIP OF TALENT - HOW CAN YOUR TALENT BE USED TO HELP? Our abilities should be dedicated to God. For example, the abilities of the successful Christian business person are needed in the church. In choosing their life vocation, people should ask how this profession can contribute to the work of the kingdom of Christ. What a blessing it would be if people were willing to tithe their abilities as well as their money!
