BULLETIN NEWS
HAITI - EARTHQUAKE
Your pastor is living with an extremely heavy heart. Extending a missionary hand to that country for thirty years, he never once heard the word EARTHQUAKE being mentioned by any Haitian resident. How frequently he has shared vocally and in writing to thousands of people that the nation of Haiti is the poorest of the poor in our Western Hemisphere. He never could have predicted that a nation with virtually nothing would experience the worst of nothing as a result of a 7.0 earthquake with dozens of after-shocks also being felt.
Millions of residents in Port-au-Prince without sanitation, water, electricity, food and medical attention becomes difficult to either realize or imagine. It is a country void of a building code, fire or adequate police protection. It has become an overwhelming task, because of the degree of devastation, for the international community to address. We do not want to hear in future weeks what additional punishment will be dumped upon these Haitian residents of Port-au-Prince.
Good news finally arrived on Thursday afternoon. Information was shared with us that Brother Francklin and the other Brothers and Sisters of the Incarnation in Port-au-Prince are alive. The majority of people there have abandoned their homes and are living under the stars. We are being told that greater than 60% of all church structures have been destroyed.
Hopefully within the next week we will have heard from Brother Francklin. An envelope will be attached to the bulletin next weekend to respond to the specific requests brought to our attention by Brother Francklin.

CONCERT FOR HAITI 2010
As I’m sure you are aware, there was a devastating earthquake this past Tuesday on the island of Haiti. The immediate needs for funds to assist in this relief effort is urgent to say the least. With that in mind, the St. Francis University Fine Arts Department is sponsoring a benefit concert called “Concert for Haiti 2010" on Monday evening, January 25th at the JFK Auditorium at 8:00PM. Jim Donovan’s band, Drum the Ecstatic International as well as the SFU World Drumming Ensemble will be performing in an effort to raise funds to help our brothers and sisters in Haiti.

FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
All parishioners who have shared their finances with Holy Name Parish during this past calendar year should have received through the mail this past week a financial statement of their contributions. Call the parish secretary if your statement has not arrived by the early part of the week.

PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS
The weekend of January 23/24, elections will be held before all Masses for our new parish council members. Last week’s
bulletin contained a photo and brief informational sketch on each candidate. This information is also posted on bulletin boards at all church entrances. Holy Name parishioners age 19 and older are eligible to vote. Please give some prayerful consideration to this important election process and be prepared to cast your vote when ballots are distributed the weekend of January 23/24.

PRAYER FOR LIFE
God, our Loving Creator, all life is in your hands from the moment of conception until death. Help us cherish our children and be grateful for the privilege of sharing in Your work of creation. Bless all who defend the rights of the unborn, the poor the handicapped and the aged. Enlighten and be merciful toward those who do not value the gift of life. Help them to seek and find the truth in You. Grant that by our care and respect for all people, we may be a sign of Your love in our world today. This we pray in the name of Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

PRO-LIFE NEWS

LIFELINES
“Catholic teaching offers a consistent set of moral principles for assessing issues, platforms, and campaigns. Because of our faith in Jesus Christ, we start with the dignity of the human person. Our teaching calls us to protect human life from conception to natural death, to defend the poor and vulnerable, and to work toward a more just society and a more peaceful world.” (Administrative Board, US Bishops, Faithful Citizenship, 1999, p. 11).

FEBRUARY - CATHOLIC PRESS MONTH - $10.00 CONTRIBUTION
A catholic newspaper can be the most effective form of diocesan-wide evangelization available. There we expect to find comments on Scripture, articles by bishops giving the official teaching of the Church, stories of papal trips bringing attention to social justice issues throughout the world, etc., etc., etc. Holy Name parishioners are requested to read the Catholic Register and prayerfully find articles there which expose them to clear, concise application of Christ's teaching and which might also dispel some of the confusion among Catholics rather than sustain it. Please use the envelope found in the February packet to make your $10.00 contribution in support of publishing Catholic teachings and news for this area of the church.
