FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD People in the Old Testament knew that water was both death dealing and life giving. Death during the flood in Genesis. Life from a rock in the desert in Exodus. The difference between the two is enormously important and significant. The difference was the Spirit. John the Baptist said "I have baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." And this is what happened when John baptized Christ, namely, the heavens were opened and the Spirit, like a dove, descended on Him. In Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist we receive the Holy Spirit and then in union with Christ our challenge is to let the Spirit flow to others. United with Christ as we are doesn't necessarily make life easy. In fact much of the time it will be difficult. Like Jesus, baptized in the Spirit, we must also experience passion and death as well as resurrection. Let that Spirit give us the strength and conviction to be true to our baptismal promises. MASS - COMMON ‘GOOD EXCUSES’ What’s in it for me? Everything! God desires only and always good. He became a man in large part to give us himself in the Mass. Why should you deny yourself such a gift? I don’t need to go to Mass to get close to God. At Mass, you receive God himself - Jesus Christ truly present in the sacrament. Even a beautiful mountain vista can’t compare to that. I had a bad experience with the Church. This is always sad. But many of us also had bad teachers - and we know the whole education system isn’t bad. Jesus wants to bring you healing at Mass. I don’t get anything out of Mass. Don’t expect it to be entertainment. Learn about what it does: joins us to Christ, separates us from sin, wipes away venial sins, commits us to the poor and prepares us for heaven. I don’t have the time. There are 24 hours a day, 168 hours a week. Mass takes one hour. That’s less than 1% of your week. You have the time; find it. I’m a sinner. I don’t deserve to be at Mass. Welcome to the club! We are a Church of saved sinners. None of us deserves to be here. See you at the confessional... LITURGICAL REFLECTION - ROMAN MISSAL Today is the Baptism of the Lord and this is the conclusion of the Christmas Season. Throughout this new year the Diocesan Liturgy Office will discuss the revised Roman Missal. The new English translations of the Latin texts will more closely reflect the words of the prayers in the Roman Missal issued by Rome. Priests and deacons, along with the Faithful, will need to learn new words and phrases to the familiar parts of the Mass. The Mass parts remain the same; the translations will be different at times. ANNUAL FINANCIAL STATEMENT This week letters will be mailed to the parishioners of Holy Name indicating financial donations to church and our Haitian Twin Parish for the calendar year 2009. Any errors found on one’s financial statement should be reported to the parish secretary. PLEASE NOTE: YOUR ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL DONATION CAN BE FOUND ON THE LETTER SENT TO YOU BY THE DIOCESE WHEN YOUR CONTRIBUTION WAS MADE. THESE DONATIONS WILL NO LONGER APPEAR ON YOUR FINANCIAL STATEMENT FROM HOLY NAME. A word of profound prayerful gratitude for the outstanding generosity of the vast majority of parishioners of Holy Name. GRATITUDE FOR A GENEROUS CHRISTMAS COLLECTION Contributions to date to the parish’s Christmas Collection have amounted to $47,044.15. Prayerful gratitude is extended to our parishioners for their generous outpouring of financial assistance to this special appeal. You are to be commended as sincere stewards of treasure!!! PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS The weekend of January 23/24, elections will be held before all Masses for our new parish council members. Today’s bulletin contains a photo and brief informational sketch on each candidate. This information will also be posted on bulletin boards at all church entrances. Holy Name parishioners age 19 and older are eligible to vote. Please give some prayerful consideration to this important election process and be prepared to cast your vote when ballots are distributed the weekend of January 23/24. FESTIVAL NOODLE MAKING DATES Volunteers in great number are needed for noodle making for the following Wednesdays: January 27, February 10, March 3, March 24, April 7 & April 28 at 8:30AM in the church hall. LIFELINES “The Holy Father speaks of the protection of life as the fundamental realization and respect for human rights. Without that realization, without that respect for the right to life, no other discussion of human rights can continue; it must be based upon the foundation of human dignity and the right to life.” Cardinal Renato Martino, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, Vatican City PRO-LIFE NEWS 1. YELLOW RIBBON SALE Prior to all Masses this weekend Support Life Ribbons will be available. Your generous offering will be appreciated.
