HAITI - THANK YOU TO PARISHIONERS
Your pastor has already mailed in excess of 300 thank you’s to non-parishioners
who have, very much similar to our membership at Holy Name, contributed
significant amounts of money to the earthquake victims in Haiti. If I were to
send a thank you to each parishioner, additional hundreds of letters would be
involved.
Allow me to use this bulletin article to express my prayerful appreciation to
parishioners for your most generous financial consideration in feeding the
thousands in Pandiassou and the area around Hinche. Brother Francklin, along
with leaders in this 12 municipalities’ region, are planning to help 52,000
people. We need to remind ourselves that these efforts are but a beginning to
what will surely remain a long term commitment to the poorest of the poor in our
Western Hemisphere.
You will be shockingly pleased to hear that as of this Wednesday’s writing
$237,621.15 has been received in response and support of the “CRY OF THE POOR”
from our Haitian neighbors. Yes, this loving care and concern in only a six week
period since the 7.0 earthquake on January 12th !!! You can continually count on
my personal blessings!!
DAILY MASS
Much discussion for Lent centers about the topic of DISCIPLINE. Positive forms
of discipline should be built into all of our Lenten practices. One of the
noblest forms of spiritual discipline is attendance at Mass during Lenten
weekdays. For your convenience you will notice that from Monday through
Thursday, Masses will be scheduled at 6:30 AM, 8:00 AM & 7:00 PM. We do not
reject other spiritual disciplines but we can not suggest anything superior to
the Eucharistic Liturgy and the graces flowing from it.
IMPORTANCE OF SACRAMENT OF PENANCE
The attitude among many Catholics toward the Sacrament of Reconciliation has
changed significantly, and, to be true, not for the best for the church's
membership. Ever so many individuals today have a personal psychologist or
counselor for the purpose of maintaining focus in their topsy-turvy world. Might
we be overlooking the availability of a spiritual resource commonly known as
one's Confessor? Peace of soul is a natural by-product of a good confession. The
Sacrament of Penance restores friendship with one's Lord and Savior. If it is
inner healing that is needed, then Confession is your answer. The Sacrament of
Penance contributes to the spiritual development of the Christian life. Jesus
provided the avenue to unload guilt. More of our Catholics need to use this
instrument of grace in order to experience inner relief and consolation.
Again this Lenten season Confessions will be heard after ALL daily Masses
beginning Monday, March 22 until Wednesday of Holy Week inclusive. The journey
to Easter must include reconciliation with our Savior. The Adult Lenten Penance
Service is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30th at 7:00 PM.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS - NOTE: NO STATIONS THIS FRIDAY, MARCH 5TH
Each Lenten Friday at 7:00 PM parishioners are invited to walk with our
suffering Lord to Calvary. What a powerful lesson of Divine love for the
individual sinner. The 14 reflections are all scripturally based. Prayed well,
the Stations afford a moving meditation of human worth in the eyes of God.
Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will follow the Stations each Lenten
Friday, except for Good Friday. Stations will not be held on Friday, March 5th
due to the First Friday Mass at 7:00 PM and Nocturnal Adoration following.
FASTING IS NOURISHMENT FOR THE SOUL
Older parishioners can remember when we Catholics were renowned for our frequent
acts of communal self denial: every Friday we abstained from meat; every day of
Lent we fasted (only one full meal, two other light ones, and no eating between
meals); the four seasonal Ember Days, when fasting was required; and fasting
also on other days of the year. Now we fast only two days of the year, namely
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. And we abstain from meat only the Fridays of
Lent.
Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI writes, “Fasting certainly brings benefits to
physical well-being, but for believers, it is, in the first place, a therapy to
heal all that prevents them from conformity to the will of God. Denying food,
which nourishes our body, nurtures an interior disposition to listen to Christ
and be fed by his saving Word. Through prayer and fasting, we allow Christ to
come and satisfy the deepest hunger that we experience in the depth of our
being: the hunger and thirst for God.” He also reminds us that fasting draws us
closer to those for whom eating little or nothing is hardly a choice. Might he
have had in mind the poor in Third World countries as is true for the country of
Haiti. Might all of us cut back a little on our eating habits during this Season
of Lent for the proper spiritual reasons?
FASTING AND ALMS-GIVING: COINS FOR HAITI
Fasting had its practical roots among rural farming communities. When winter
storage bins ran dry before the spring crop was available, families banded
together with their neighbors, combining whatever food was left and rationing
supplies proportionately so no one would be left hungry. This is the spirit in
which we enter our Lenten Fast this year. Coins saved by our meager meals can
feed thousands of starving children in Haiti. If the whole Church practiced alms
giving with great generosity during Lent, think what a difference this could
mean for poorer nations like Haiti in the world economy today.
LENTEN MEAGER MEAL-Must Sign Up By Monday
In keeping with the spirit of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, our Parish Meager
Meal is Sunday, March 7, 5:PM in the Church Hall. This simple meal of soup and
bread is a reminder of our solidarity with the poor, especially in Haiti. No
charge; a free will offering is invited for “Kindred Journey” Haiti. Call Sr.
Margie by Monday, March 1. Families, friends, neighbors welcome!
EASTER DUTY OBLIGATION
One of the six precepts of the Catholic Church obliges members of Communion age
to receive Holy Eucharist at least once a year. This precept should be fulfilled
during the Easter Season, that is, between Ash Wednesday and Pentecost Sunday.
Those living in serious sin (mortal) are bound to confess their sinfulness prior
to receiving Holy Communion.
BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP
The monthly meetings of the Bereavement Support Group are temporarily suspended.
If at any time one should feel the need to speak with someone concerning issues
of grief and loss, both Sr. Margie (472-8315) and Veronica Wilson (472-6954)
invite you to contact them. The Church Lending Library (across from the Cry
Room) also has many helpful books and audio/visual materials on related topics.
LIFELINES
(from “40 Days for Life”) - Heavenly Father, how awesome it is that You created
us in Your Image! This is the basis of our human dignity from which flows our
human rights. Forgive our nation for not recognizing the right to live in the
preborn human.
ST. VINCENT DEPAUL EASTER FOOD DRIVE
Please remember our hurting neighbors this Holy Season by filling our Food Bags
for their Easter dinner. The bags will be distributed at all Masses next
weekend. A $5.00 donation will help defray the cost of hams. May Our Lord bless
you as you are in our prayers for your continued support and generosity.
RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION: THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
As of the Easter Vigil, April 3, the option to receive from the chalice the
Blood of Christ will be restored as common practice. We encourage parishioners
to do so. The Sign of Peace as a simple handshake will also resume. (Waiving to
friends across the Church is not an appropriate liturgical gesture for the Sign
of Peace.) As of Easter, the full band of Eucharistic Ministers assigned to each
Mass will be needed for the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ. It is
presumed that when a person is not feeling well, they would know to refrain from
drinking from the Communion Cup.
FESTIVAL NOODLE MAKING DATES
Volunteers in great number are needed for noodle making for this Wednesday,
March 3rd. Early bird helpers welcome after 7:00 AM. No experience is needed.
Come for all or part of the day. Free lunch. Noodles bagged at 8:30 AM on
Fridays. Additional noodle dates: March 24, April 7 & April 21.
FESTIVAL FLEA MARKET -Time for Spring House Cleaning!
Let’s make this year’s flea market bigger and better than ever! Box up items so
lids close. No clothing, used stuffed animals or baskets. If possible, store
things at home till Thurs. June 3rd when the flea market tent is set up. Or
continue to drop off items in the Church Library. Call Sr. Margie first if
planing to donate small furniture: lamps, end tables, etc. New items for men,
women and children also needed for festival prizes. Happy spring cleaning!
PARISHIONERS WITH UNLISTED PHONE NUMBER
In the near future, phone calls will begin asking for donations to our Annual
Festival. While we are sensitive in releasing unlisted phone numbers of
parishioners, we normally do publish these numbers and make them available to
the Festival Calling Committee for the purpose of soliciting these donations. If
you DO NOT WISH for the parish secretary to release your unlisted number to our
Committee, please notify the rectory immediately (472-7244 ext. 101).

STEWARDSHIP OF TALENT - LEISURE TIME IS NOT JUST “TO SPEND”
A new sense of mission could be the outcome if a church takes seriously its
challenge of relating to a more leisure-oriented world. For Christians, leisure
time is not just “to spend.” It becomes time to serve. The multiple dimensions
of mission in our time suggest that the great variety of work skills and
personal capabilities can be utilized in the emerging mission situation.
Consequently the church can move even further into the changing world in which,
in God’s providence, it is placed.
CCD PAGE ADDED TO PARISH WEBSITE
A “blog” has been created to help CCD parents and students have access to needed
information, prayers, upcoming events, etc. Please be patient with us as this
site is new and it may take a little while to "tweak" it. Please check back
often for new “posts.” Comments are welcome and appreciated. Go to
www.holynameebg.org and click on CCD Page under Recent Activities & Photos.
PARISH MISSION 2010 - WELCOME FR. SCOTT SEETHALER
Our Parish Mission, April 18-21, will be conducted by Fr. Scott Seethaler, a
Capuchin-Franciscan priest from his native city of Pittsburgh. A man of warmth,
humor and a great love for Jesus, Fr. Scott has been involved with the formation
of seminarians and novices and has worked with the poor at the Catholic Spanish
Center in Washington, D.C. He has served in parishes and taught at Slippery Rock
and Duquesne Universities. Presently, he travels throughout the U.S. giving
parish missions and retreats. His radio program, Joyful Reflections, airs 6 days
a week in Western PA, and he has published books as well as spiritual talks on
CD and DVD. In 2008, Fr. Scott received the Archbishop Donald Wuerl Flame of
Hope Award for his years of preaching and spreading the Good News, and for his
ministry to the poor at the Anne Seethaler Hospital which he founded in Oaxaca,
Mexico.
