BULLETIN NEWS

PARISH LENTEN BOOKLET
Copies of Fr. Sica’s Lenten Booklet are still available, one per family, please. Living With Passion presents a daily human interest story, simple and to the point: The Lenten Journey is all about love. Fr. Sica offers upbeat advice for getting “passion” back in our lives, passion for life, for people, for the kingdom of God. Suggested actions are really do-able. Read it. And do it!

HAITI NEWS
A lengthy letter was released by Brother Francklin this past week. He had reason to travel from Pandiassou to Port-au-Prince. He described what he had seen in Port-au-Prince. More than a million men and women living outdoors under waterproof tents or simply under a tarp. Thousands of children and grandchildren are sleeping in the streets. Large numbers suffering from fever and various types of gastrointestinal distress. Psychotic fear is prevalent caused by the concern of additional aftershocks. He says that fear is growing stronger and that three million of his compatriots are profoundly traumatized.
Aid is not getting everywhere in Port-au-Prince or to the countryside. He says that in the Central Plateau where he lives, only one municipality out of 12 is receiving aid. Receiving ten 40-foot containers from Canada, he is concerned for their safe transportation from Port-au-Prince to Hinche. The contents from these containers will be shared with 12 municipalities involving 52,000.
He concludes his letter by thanking, from the bottom of his heart, each and every one who has been able to show compassion and understanding, especially sharing financial generosity, to his weeping and martyred people. To date, Kindred Journey Fund Inc., within a five week period, has received $227,464.53. I too prayerfully and gratefully thank these considerate benefactors.

HAITI FUND RAISER - HOLIDAY HAIR
The ladies at Holiday Hair wanted to be part of helping Haiti, so they organized a cut-a-thon on February 7th, with the help of Holy Name Parish and the wonderful people at the local newspapers. There were 60 hair cuts that day. Hearts for Haiti were also displayed at the stations for a one dollar donation, and a basket was raffled off. Mid’s Candy bars were sold for $1.00 each to help with the funds. A total of $919.00 was raised for the victims of the Haitian Earthquake.

LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fast and abstinence. All Fridays of Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. The Church encourages volunteer fasting on other days of Lent.
Fasting refers to only one full meal, with two small meals and no eating otherwise during the day. Those who have reached their 18th birthday and not yet their 59th birthday are obliged to fast. Abstinence refers to not eating meat at all during the day. All those who have reached their 14th birthday are obliged to abstain.

DAILY MASS
Much discussion for Lent centers about the topic of DISCIPLINE. Positive forms of discipline should be built into all of our Lenten practices. One of the noblest forms of spiritual discipline is attendance at Mass during Lenten weekdays. For your convenience you will notice that from Monday through Thursday, Masses will be scheduled at 6:30 AM, 8:00 AM & 7:00 PM. We do not reject other spiritual disciplines but we can not suggest anything superior to the Eucharistic Liturgy and the graces flowing from it.

IMPORTANCE OF SACRAMENT OF PENANCE
The attitude among many Catholics toward the Sacrament of Reconciliation has changed significantly, and, to be true, not for the best for the church's membership. Ever so many individuals today have a personal psychologist or counselor for the purpose of maintaining focus in their topsy-turvy world. Might we be overlooking the availability of a spiritual resource commonly known as one's Confessor? Peace of soul is a natural by-product of a good confession. The Sacrament of Penance restores friendship with one's Lord and Savior. If it is inner healing that is needed, then Confession is your answer. The Sacrament of Penance contributes to the spiritual development of the Christian life. Jesus provided the avenue to unload guilt. More of our Catholics need to use this instrument of grace in order to experience inner relief and consolation.
Again this Lenten season Confessions will be heard after ALL daily Masses beginning Monday, March 22 until Wednesday of Holy Week inclusive. The journey to Easter must include reconciliation with our Savior. The Adult Lenten Penance Service is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30th at 7:00 PM.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Each Lenten Friday at 7:00 PM parishioners are invited to walk with our suffering Lord to Calvary. What a powerful lesson of Divine love for the individual sinner. The 14 reflections are all scripturally based. Prayed well, the Stations afford a moving meditation of human worth in the eyes of God. Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will follow the Stations each Lenten Friday, except for Good Friday. Stations will not be held on Friday, March 5th due to the First Friday Mass at 7:00 PM and Nocturnal Adoration following.

FASTING AND ALMS-GIVING: COINS FOR HAITI
Fasting had its practical roots among rural farming communities. When winter storage bins ran dry before the spring crop was available, families banded together with their neighbors, combining whatever food was left and rationing supplies proportionately so no one would be left hungry. This is the spirit in which we enter our Lenten Fast this year. Coins saved by our meager meals can feed thousands of starving children in Haiti. If the whole Church practiced alms giving with great generosity during Lent, think what a difference this could mean for poorer nations like Haiti in the world economy today.

LENTEN MEAGER MEAL-Register Now
In keeping with the spirit of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, our Parish Meager Meal is Sunday, March 7, 5:PM in the Church Hall. This simple meal of soup and bread is a reminder of our solidarity with the poor, especially in Haiti. No charge; a free will offering is invited for “Kindred Journey” Haiti. Call Sr. Margie to register. Families, friends, neighbors welcome!

RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION: THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
As of the Easter Vigil, April 3, the option to receive from the chalice the Blood of Christ will be restored as common practice. We encourage parishioners to do so. The Sign of Peace as a simple handshake will also resume. (Waiving to friends across the Church is not an appropriate liturgical gesture for the Sign of Peace.) As of Easter, the full band of Eucharistic Ministers assigned to each Mass will be needed for the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ. It is presumed that when a person is not feeling well, they would know to refrain from drinking from the Communion Cup.

RCIA RITE OF ELECTION
This Sunday afternoon, Holy Name sends forth two catechumens and two candidates to join Bishop Joseph Adamec for the Rite of Election. This begins their final Lenten preparation to become Catholic at the Easter Vigil. Colleen Mullen, Stephanie Blackstone, Al Kiepert and Eileen Dumm and their sponsors will be greeted by the Bishop along with approximately 100 others who are looking forward to their reception into full communion in the Catholic Church. Please pray for our RCIA group as we journey these last six weeks of Lent together toward the Easter Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist..

CATHOLIC UPDATE: THE KEY TO DISCERNMENT
Copies on Magazine Racks. Discernment is the spiritual art of making good decisions based on the will of God for our lives. St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, established a method of discernment that is still used world-wide today in spiritual direction and Ignation retreats. This Update talks about “praydreaming” (as opposed to daydreaming) as a way of conversing with God about the important choices we may face. As we speak with God with humility and emotional honesty, we strive to notice several movements in our heart. What dream or choice filles me with a holy or wholesome desire? Which choice draws me closer to God? Which fills me with faith? Hope? Charity? Which choice, even if difficult or painful, fills me with peace? By contrast, which choice disturbs my peace? Leaves me feeling desolate. Leads to agitation or a sense of betrayal of my best self? Over time, as we weigh the Word of God and the words of our friends and spiritual advisers, the Spirit of God will help us discern the dream God has for us. When we make that choice, no matter how challenging, our heart’s desire and God’s desire for us become one. And that is pure joy!

FESTIVAL NOODLE MAKING DATES
Volunteers in great number are needed for noodle making for Wednesday, March 3rd. Early bird helpers welcome after 7:00 AM. No experience is needed. Come for all or part of the day. Free lunch. Noodles bagged at 8:30 AM on Fridays. Additional noodle dates: March 24, April 7 & April 21.

FESTIVAL FLEA MARKET -Time for Spring House Cleaning!
Let’s make this year’s flea market bigger and better than ever! Box up items so lids close. No clothing, used stuffed animals or baskets. If possible, store things at home till Thurs. June 3rd when the flea market tent is set up. Or continue to drop off items in the Church Library. Call Sr. Margie first if planing to donate small furniture: lamps, end tables, etc. New items for men, women and children also needed for festival prizes. Happy Spring cleaning!

PARISHIONERS WITH UNLISTED PHONE NUMBER
In the near future, phone calls will begin asking for donations to our Annual Festival. While we are sensitive in releasing unlisted phone numbers of parishioners, we normally do publish these numbers and make them available to the Festival Calling Committee for the purpose of soliciting these donations. If you DO NOT WISH for the parish secretary to release your unlisted number to our Committee, please notify the rectory immediately (472-7244 ext. 101).

FIRST PENANCE
Next Sunday, February 28 at 2:30PM, 59 children of our parish will be blessed with the grace of the Sacrament of Penance for the first time. We invite the entire parish to join in prayer for their intentions so that the reality of God’s abundant mercy and love might always be known and accepted by these young Catholics for the remainder of their earthly lives. We congratulate them as they advance one step closer to the Eucharistic table.

MOTHER /SON NIGHT OUT
Approximately 100 mothers and sons came together Saturday, February 13th for an evening of fun and games hosted by the Youth Activities Committee. A big thank you goes out to all those who helped make this event a success: Sharon Clawson, Jackie Hajjar, Pam Ley, Maria Lauer, Lisa Swope, Dee Thomas, Darlene Walker and Sarah Zearing (committee members). LIFELINES - A PRO-LIFE PRAYER
God of all goodness, you have entrusted us with the gift of life. Help us to appreciate that gift from the first moments of conception to the last breaths of old age. Send your strength to all those who defend the unborn, the weak, and the dying against attempts to cut short their lives. May your Holy Spirit touch the hearts of those who are tempted to choose the way of death rather than life. Grant that your people may always be a sign of your love in the world. Amen.

STEWARDSHIP OF TALENT - BEING A SERVANT - SHARE SOME OF YOUR UNIQUE TALENTS
Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to rank first, he must remain the last one of all and the servant of all.” Being a servant seems a top priority in the mind of Jesus. That shouldn’t startle us because Jesus remains in our midst as the servant of all.
Sometimes we aren’t conscious of the opportunities that we have to give our talent to our church. We participate in prayer. We contribute financially. However, there are skills, talents and knowledge that each one of us is blessed with. We don’t always use these for the common good. The many parish ministries open to the laity can tap a mother lode of talent among men and women.
