DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
The second Sunday of Easter was first referred to as “Divine Mercy Sunday” by
our Lord Jesus who in 1935 appeared in a series of visions to a polish nun named
St. Maria Faustina Kowalska. In these visions, which are recorded in “The Diary
of Divine Mercy” (St. Faustina’s own writing sold in stores now), Jesus urges
people to take advantage of the special graces of full remission of all
punishment due to sin by receiving Communion at Mass, going to confession,
reciting the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and venerating the image of the Divine Mercy,
all on Divine Mercy Sunday. On May 23, 2000 the Congregation for Divine Worship
and the Discipline of the Sacraments at the Vatican decreed that “throughout the
world, the second Sunday of Easter will receive the name ‘Divine Mercy Sunday’.”
HAITI UPDATE: RECOVERY IS “REALLY COMPLICATED”
(The following remarks are taken from a lengthy letter received from Brother
Francklin April 1,2010.)
Someone asked me, “Where do Haitian people find the strength to live and commit
themselves to anything after such an earthquake? Our country continues to drag
along: unbelievable insecurity and trauma. The majority of the population lives
under tents - plastic or canvas tarps. Every downpour is a nightmare. The
socio-economic situation that was beginning to improve before the earthquake has
been shattered. Still, Haitians are standing like a reed! How can this be? We
are a religious and believing people. For us, everything rests on God. Yes,
everything. Like people of the Old Testament, our history makes us tough,
resilient and strong. And we have a sense of humor, lucky for us. You have to
really listen to understand the humor of the poor describing life after the
earthquake through stories and anecdotes. In general, a Haitian needs very
little to find ways to create recreation and celebration. If we manage to keep
our heads above water, it is thanks to God, certainly, and to our capacity to
laugh, to have a good time, even in the worst of moments. In rural areas, it is
to the rhythm of song and celebration and dance that we bury our dead.
But concretely, where are we today? The massive aid promised by the
International Community is arriving drop by drop in the most remote corners
where the displaced have found refuge. There is a terrible psychosis of fear in
people. The need for psychologists is increasing as more and more children
suffer psychological problems and deserve help and support. Peasants need seeds,
irrigation pumps and technical supervision to confront the rainy season. And we
need to re-open the schools, but it is complicated. Buildings fell victim to the
earthquake. Many instructors lost their homes and members of their families.
Will they return? Where will they live? Where will temporary classrooms be
located, with refugees living in tents on school grounds? What about the mad
dogs roving the streets biting children? The task is immense. Colossal. And very
complicated.
Thank you, my friends around the world who love us, have faith in us and give us
the chance to live and exist as a free people, independent and proud.
God, Father of Jesus, of the unique history of the world and of humanity, God of
Life, of Abundant Life, recreate in us Your Life, and give us hope for a better
life. Thank you, Life!
Thank you Eternal Life! Amen.

LITURGY CORNER
The 3rd edition of the English version of the Roman Missal is being prepared for
use in 2011. The new English text will more closely reflect the Latin text. What
will be new or different about this revised translation? One will notice a
distinctive style or formulation of the prayers, especially those used in the
Mass, which will reflect a more formal, noble liturgical tone. For example: “The
Lord be with you.” “And with your spirit.” Look for more information to be
included regularly in this bulletin throughout the coming months.
