Sister Marjorie McGuire, CCW
Carmelite Community of the Word

My first thought about religious life was in the fifth grade at St. Francis Xavier School, Cresson.  We had a St. Dominic Savio Childrens Club and it impressed me that a fourteen-year-old boy had been declared a saint by the church.  This got me to thinking about my own faith, even at a young age.  I started to pray, to talk with Jesus as a friend, and to walk to daily Mass when I could.

After graduating from Bishop Carroll High School and entering the convent I took the name of Sr. Mary Dominic for awhile after this patron saint of youth.  Later, I returned to my baptismal name.

In 1971, I was one of the founding members of the Carmelite Community of the Word.  Our community has now been granted canonical status by Rome.  We are a religious institute of Diocesan Right, called to serve the Church of Altoona-Johnstown.

My own roots go back to Captain Michael McGuire and the McGuire Settlement of Loretto.  This diocese is home to me, and the people are like an extended family.  I'm happy to be called to live out my religious vocation here.

As CARMELITES, we live a communal life of prayer, penance and service, drawing support from our Lady of Mt. Carmel and the spiritual wisdom of St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, and St. Theresa, the Little Flower.  As a Carmelite of the Word, we center our lives on Jesus, the Incarnate Word, and on Sacred Scripture.  Our special gift or charism to the Church is the ministry of Evangelization.  It seems natural that each Sister would want to share the good news of the Gospel with others.  As director of Evangelization and Adult Ministries at Holy Name, Ebensburg, I feel blest to be able to unite my gifts and talents with those of an already active, evangelizing parish.

The Scriptures are at the heart of my vocation, and it has been a privilege to teach religion classes and Bible Study for over 35 years.

As Carmelites of the Word, we are primarily women of prayer who choose to actively involve ourselves in ministries of service in the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown.  Each Sister's unique gifts are respected and fostered as we place ourselves daily in the presence of the Living God and the service of God's people.
